Faultless Derry Secure Second Spot
Derry City cemented a second-place finish as a fantastic first half saw them dampen St Patrick’s Athletic preparation for the upcoming FAI Cup final.
The win sees Ruadhri Higgins’ side finish with successive wins to seal second, Pats’ also well up in third ahead of their chance at Cup glory against Bohemians at the Aviva next Sunday.
Aiming to sign off from 2023 with a win, Derry were fast out of the traps as a quick corner inside two minutes led to Paul McMullan slinging in a superb cross which the towering figure of Mark Connolly headed just wide.
Soon enough, the relentless pressure told as another short corner undid St Pats’, Doherty knocking the ball short to Cameron McJannet who delivered a beauty of a cross right onto the head of Brandon Kavanagh, the young winger timing his run and burying his header, to perfection.
Will Patching was next to take aim at goal, his pearoller drifting just wide of Dean Lyness’ post.
His next attempt, though, was a firecracker sent sizzling into the top corner, as Doherty drove down the left purposefully, spied Patching in space on the edge of the box and the midfielder struck it sweetly, spiralling beyond a helpless, Dean Lyness into the top corner.
Lyness was then called upon to keep out a fierce free kick from Kavanagh as Pats’ suffocated under the fast pace and relentless tempo Derry were setting.
After a barrage of corners, McMullan squared a pass to Michael Duffy who wastefully poked wide, the only blemish on an otherwise near-perfect first forty-five minutes by the hosts.
Away manager, Jon Daly, changed his defensive rearguard over the interval and his team finally tested home goalkeeper, Brian Maher, as Jason McClelland’s effort was parried.
Then, the Candystripes came again, Patching sending half time substitute, David Norman sliding to the shops for a pint of milk, with a delightful turn eliminating the defender from the equation, his cross found Duffy, unmarked, two yards out, who to the crowd’s disbelief booted over the bar.
For all their increased possession, the Inchicore visitors were still opened up again by McMullan, the Scot masterfully finding Patching who aimed low and fast for the bottom corner, denied his brace only by a good, spawling save by Lyness.
Finally, though, number three arrived as substitute, Jordan McEneff found himself in space and sharply dispatched a clinical effort into the bottom corner, his scoring season coming full circle having netted Derry’s first of this league season, all the way back in February against these opponents at Richmond Park.
Higgins introduced youngsters, Evan McLaughlin, and Luke O’Donnell late on, the latter for a club debut, as the crowd could savour a fine finish to the season.
Daly must now rally his troops as they seek to cap a remarkable season of progress with a trophy against old rivals, Bohs, as a Dublin date with destiny awaits St Pats’, just nine days away now.
