Match Report

Pats gain ground on title leaders

Chris Forrester's 25th minute goal was enough to give St. Patrick’s Athletic all three points; as they enjoyed a 1-0 win over Derry City at Richmond Park tonight.

Despite this victory, the victors remain in third; level with Sligo and Shamrock Rovers on goal difference alone. The main talking point of the game will be Jamie Lennon's red card as the midfielder was shown two yellows; becoming the fourth Pats player shown his marching orders in three games.

The home side dominated the opening 45 minutes but failed to create any scoreable chances in the opening exchanges. Darragh Burns looked lively, with the forward trying to play in Ronan Coughlan, but his cross failed to reach the target. Burns had a chance at goal himself after dancing through the Derry defence, but his shot was easily saved by the keeper.

A goal was on the cards for Pat's and in the 25th minute after a scramble in the box, the ball fell to Forrester who turned and fired a shot high into the right hand top corner leaving Nathan Gartside no chance in the Derry goal.

Pats again put the pressure on the Derry defence late in the half, Robbie Benson broke clear in midfield finding Forrester in space on the edge of the box, he played Burns inside but his shot was skied over the bar.

Moments later Billy King was found in space one on one against the keeper but the St. Pats man looked to take an age to shoot at the target and Eoin Toal brilliantly slid in to block the shot.

For a third game in a row now St Patrick’s Athletic have had a player dismissed, Lennon shown a second yellow card for a high challenge in the 57th minute.

Derry’s best and only chance of the second half came in the 65th minute, when a brilliant corner from Jack Malone was whipped onto the head of Toal, but his effort cracked off the post.
