Match Report

McCarthy Double Helps Galway Overcome Blues

Ed McCarthy scored a brace while Wassim Aouachria was also on target as Galway Utd maintained their unbeaten home record in the league with a fine win over Waterford.

In what was a wet and miserable night on the Dyke Road McCarthy opened the scoring in the 19th minute and doubled his side’s advantage in the 40th minute. Former Blues player Aouachria grabbed a third goal for John Caulfield’s side in the 54th minute. Sam Perry pulled a goal back for the Blues in the 86th minute.

Both sides had chances with Galway keeper Brendan Clarke and Waterford netminder Sam Sargeant forced into making saves. Sargeant denied Stephen Walsh in the 11th minute while Clarke saved from Roland Idowu two minutes later

The home side broke the deadlock in the 19th minute. Aouachria played the ball to McCarthy, he took on the Waterford defence who stood off him and then hit an excellent strike to the net.

From a Waterford corner in the 24th minute the ball fell to Barry Baggley but his shot went just over the bar. Down the other end in the 28th minute David Hurley’s free found Walsh at the back post but Sargeant brought off a great save to deny him.

Minutes later Ronan Coughlan’s effort was deflected out for a corner. In the 34th minute Walsh found Aodh Dervin who forced Sargeant into making a fine save.

Five minutes from the break the home side got their second goal; Clarke’s goal-kick took a bounce to fall nicely for McCarthy who fired a neat effort to the net.

The home side got goal number three in the 54th minute; Hurley did well to win the ball in midfield before he played it into Aouachria and he made no mistake.

Waterford substitute keeper Jason Healy tipped over McCarthy’s cross in the 58th minute. Clarke saved Cameron Cresswell’s effort in the 65th minute as the visitors tried to get back into the game.

Both managers emptied their bench as the half went on. In the 85th minute Idowu hit a long range effort but it was saved by the Galway netminder. The Blues pulled a goal back in the 86th minute when Coughlan’s header at the back post was finished from close range by Perry.
