Match Report

Galway snatch a point at the death

Galway Utd substitute Francely Lomboto earned his side a draw against Waterford at the RSC.

As the clock ticked down it looked like Ronan Coughlan’s first half brace would see Waterford pick up their first win of the season over league leaders Galway Utd. Lomboto had other ideas.

Coughlan opened the scoring with about 20 seconds gone on the clock. Galway drew level through Killian Brouder in the 16th minute before Coughlan put Waterford back in front in the 22nd minute.

That second goal was Coughlan’s 31st of the season and saw him break the Blues’ record which was held since 1955. It also set a new First Division record which was held by Danny Furlong since 2015.

About 20 seconds had gone on the clock when the home side broke the deadlock. Coughlan won possession, he played the ball to Roland Idowu who in turn found Christie Pattisson out wide, his ball was finished to the net by Coughlan.

In the 11th minute Coughlan had a header cleared off the line as the home side started the game so well.

Galway began to come into the game and in the 16th minute they were back on level terms. A cross into the box from David Hurley wasn’t cleared and Brouder made no mistake firing to the net.

Both sides had chances to get a second goal but it was that man Coughlan who was on target again in the 22nd minute. Barry Baggley’s cross was headed home by the talisman to give the Blues the lead.

Waterford had to defend well while right before half-time Keith Long’s side were awarded a free which Baggley hit just wide.

Former Waterford player Wassim Aouachria came on as a sub for the second half and  had the first chance of the half but his header was just wide in the 59th minute. Coughlan then had an effort in the 62nd minute; he turned and took a shot but Brendan Clarke was down to save.

In the 65th minute Idowu went down in the box but referee Alan Patchell waved play on. Baggley put in a superb tackle to deny Aouachria minutes later. He unfortunately got injured and had to go off.

Brendan Clarke pulled off an excellent save in the 85th minute to deny Coughlan his and his side’s third goal.

Galway had created very little in the second half but in stoppage time a free from Clarke fell nicely for Lomoto and he fired to the net.
