Match Report

Waterford upset 10 men Galway United in RSC

Waterford triumph over the tribesmen after a chaotic second half which saw Galway reduced to 10 men while conceding two penalties.

Walsh opened up the scoring for the away side after 12 minutes with Waterfords Roland Idowu netting from inside the area after 18 minutes.

The second half saw Galway reduced to 10 men Conor McCormack sent off for a cynical foul on the 65th minute, Phoenix Patterson skied his effort over only for Waterford to get awarded another Penalty on the 82nd minute and Junior Quitirna made no mistake with his attempt as the third-placed side reduce the gap to second.

It was an open and quick start to proceedings in the RSC as both sides came out the blocks quickly.

Galway did start the stronger and created chances from the off, by the 6th minute Galway had had three corners in a row all well defended but the away side were treating.

One of those threatening early on was Galway's Stephen Walsh and after 12 minutes he was on the scoresheet after a ball was squared across the box to Walsh who tapped home from close range the visitors 1-0 up and in the driver's seat.

This goal saw Waterford attack with more intent as their half chances started leading to shots and corners followed.  After a few corners of their own Waterford worked a short routine on the 18th minute that found Roland Idowu whos left-footed effort rifle past Conor Kearns from inside the area teams level.

Both sides settled into the game from this point and due to the high temperatures, a water break on the 23rd minute broke up the play for both sides to catch a break after a lively opener.

Waterford came closest to taking the lead after this when Phoenix Patterson cross from the right-hand side just sailed past the post and nobody at the back post to tap it home, the sides went in level at the break 1-1.

The second half saw the game turn on its head as both sides went looking for the win the match became end to end and saw both sides get exposed.

Galway suffered the most as they were caught on a counterattack with Conor McCormack getting his matching orders after 67 minutes conceding a penalty and Galway down to 10 men.

Phoenix Patterson stepped up to take the penalty but his effort rose way above the bar United survived but not for too long.

Waterford upped the ante on the 10 men of Galway and it wasn't long until the away side conceded another penalty in the 80th minute and Junior Quintirna made no mistake and slotted home Waterford in front with less than 10 minutes remaining.

Waterford attacked and defended well in the final 10 minutes to see out the win in what was a very enjoyable match which saw 11 yellow cards 1 red card 2 penalties and three goals in the RSC and the Home side narrow the gap to second place
