Match Report
Waterford took another step to returning to Premier Division football, seeing off a limp Galway challenge, 3-0 at Markets Field. First half goals from Junior Quitirna and Wassim Aouachria put Waterford in a firm position at half-time and it was one which they wouldn’t relinquish. In fact, they punished a missed penalty from Stephen Walsh, as Quitirna fired home the third to seal the win. They now face UCD in next Friday’s promotion relegation play-off final. It was the Students who relegated them from the Premier Division 12 months ago, and Waterford can get their revenge next weekend. Quitirna found the net on 10 minutes. In-form Phoenix Patterson passed a free-kick which the winger fired directly at goal from 25 yards. The strike was poor and shouldn’t have worried Conor Kearns but it bounced beyond the netminder for the breakthrough strike. With Galway coming back in the tie, the game was halted for six minutes. The away stand, which was home to Waterford fans for the night, was evacuated and the fans had to move to the grass embankment. The stand had structural issues, which it is believed were flagged earlier in this week by the Waterford club and supporters. Galway did dominate possession and territory, for long spells of this contest but little cutting edge meant an overall very routine for Paul Martin in the Blues goal. United enjoyed the better of the second half, and were allowed to do so. Indeed, Waterford were happy to see the game trundle towards the end like this, until Tunmise Sobowale conceded a penalty. Luckily for the full-back, he did receive a second yellow, and he saw the penalty saved. Stephen Walsh fired to Martin’s right but the keeper got a both gloves to it to push clear. Within minutes, the contest was over. Junior Quitirna raced clear down the left and finished low beyond O’Keefe for the insurance goal. Wassim Aouachria then doubled the lead in first half -stoppage time. He raced onto a Shane Griffin clearance to outmuscle Max Hemmings and fire home for a 2-0 half-time lead. The end of John Caulfield’s time at Galway United seems inevitable, after another disappointing campaign.Waterford one step closer to Premier Division promotion
Conor McCormack’s wonderful delivery was headed onto the post, and clear, by Stephen Walsh. Galway dominated proceedings early in the second half but were unable to cut the lead in half.

Galway have had some chances since the goal, but unable to take any. Martin makes a good save from Walsh, again.
Quitirna punishes Galway, as he races down the left and fires low beyond Kearns to seal the tie. Game shot and the match.
Stephen Walsh sees his penalty saved! It was well struck but Martin saves it well pushing it clear.
Peanlty for Galway
The belief starting to go from the Galway fans and players, Waterford firmly in control.
Another corner to Galway, another corner wasted.
Junior wins a much needed free-kick, which relieves the pressure.

Another Galway corner
Patterson gets onto a wonderful Junior pass, what a chance this is, but he fires the ball well wide.
Stephen Walsh heads a curled cross off the post, what a chance!
Wassim Aouachria latches onto a Shane Griffin and blasts beyond Kearns. Swift counter-attack.
Patterson blocked from distance,
Eight minutes to added here at the end of the half.
Killian Cantwell heads behind for a Galway corner. Ed McCarthy smashes the cleared corner into the away stand - which is now empty.
Rob Manley in for the injured David Hurley. Galway pressing since the restart.
Back underway and Waterford block the free-kick, but at the cost of a corner.
Before the free-kick can be taken we have a delay due to "structural issues" to the away stand. The Waterford fans are now leaving that stand and moving to the bank at Markets Field.
Tunmise Sobowale into the book for a foul on Ed McCarthy.
Stephen Walsh and Ed McCarthy are inches away from connecting with a low cross. Edge of the seat stuff at times.
Patterson's corner causes issues with Darragh Power close to poking home from inside the six-yard box.
Sobowale wins a corner for Waterford
Waterford withstanding a bit of Galway pressure, with some ease.
Waterford a big shell shocked, what a mistake.
Junior Quitirna opens the scoring, but what a mistake from goalkeeper Conor Kearns. Patterson rolls the free-kick to Junior who fires from 30 yards. His dipping effort is a tame one but Kearns gets it all wrong and the ball somehow goes past him for the opening goal.
Waterford win a free-kick in a promising postion
Wonderful support here for both sides, clearly well over 1,000 here for both sides. Galway fans occupy the main stand, with Waterford given the away stand.
Galway win a free-kick 30 yards out which is played straight against the wall.
Waterford get the game underway.
Good evening, the teams are in and they should be available for your viewing. Biggest game of the season (naturally) for both sides. Waterford edged Treaty 7-4 on aggregate, while Galway won out 5-2 against Longford, Mikie Rowe the hero. Rowe is content with a place on the bench. The Markets Field surface looking superb here in Limerick.
