Hurley strike steals points late in Athlone
Galway United got back to winning ways with a late winner against Athlone Town in Lissywollen tonight.
After a mostly uneventful first 85 minutes, David Hurley broke the deadlock and Athlone hearts. It got Galway back to winning ways amidst their clearly inevitable march to the First Division title.
The game was delayed right at the beginning. A certain corner of the Lissywollen pitch was waterlogged thanks to the torrential rain earlier. The club volunteers got to work and cleared it to the point where it could pass a bounce test, with kick-off being fifteen minutes late.
The first half was uneventful but both teams did have some good chances. Franz Pierrot and Michael Peprah forced Brendan Clarke into action in the first couple of minutes, which was encouraging for Athlone.
Jamar Campion Hinds drilled a few low crosses to Pierrot throughout the half but the Haitian either got too under it or didn’t get enough contact. Nonetheless, it was a decent half for Athlone.
Galway on the other hand got better chances but were a bit wasteful. Enda Minogue dropped a cross that gave Ronan Manning a good chance, but it was shanked over.
David Hurley got on the end of a Vincent Bordan cross but couldn’t control it, whilst Stephen Walsh also shanked a chance over. The teams would go into the half all square at 0-0.
The second half also started in uneventful fashion. The first good chance came ten minutes in when Vincent Borden was played through but he just couldn’t get the contact desired.
Despite the lack of clear-cut chances, Galway were very clearly on top as Athlone remained camped in their own half the entire half. Nonetheless, it took time for Hurley to get the breakthrough.
In the meantime, Hurley himself snatched a shot wide. Enda Minogue also pulled off a few good saves but it mattered little come minute 85.
It was a good move from Galway. It was moved across the pitch to Conor O’Keeffe at right back and his cross was on the money. Hurley rose highest and headed in, as perfect a headed goal as you’ll see. Ecstatic celebrations followed.
Galway move 16 points clear with Waterford’s game being abandoned. Athlone remain in the playoffs but will be bitterly disappointed with the late winner for Galway.
