Shels Pass Tricky Waves Test To Advance
Holders Shelbourne came from behind to book their place in the last four of the Sports Direct Women’s FAI Cup with a hard fought win over DLR Waves at Tolka Park.
Waves’s display belied their league position as they put it up to Shels throughout. It was a below par performance from the holders who had to work hard to get this win.
It was substitute Morgan Rees who scored the decisive goal for Shels; a stunning strike in the 67th minute.
The home side had to make a late change to their starting line-up after captain Pearl Slattery pulled up in the warm-up. Libby Moore started in her place.
Shels enjoyed the early possession but didn’t create much to trouble Waves keeper Eve Badana. Out of nothing the visitors took the lead in the seventh minute when Freya Roche lobbed the ball over Shels keeper Amanda McQuillan.
Noel King’s charges tried to get back into the game but squandered a few chances. They finally were on level terms in the 27th minute; nice play from Kerri Letmon saw her find Megan Smyth-Lynch and she made no mistake from close range.
The visitors had a chance to go back in front just before the break. The excellent Neema Nyangasi played the ball to Michelle Doonan and she was fouled in the box by Maggie Pierce.
Doonan stepped up to take the spot-kick but unfortunately blasted it over the bar.
Waves started the second half with a real purpose and began putting pressure on Shels. Shels were sloppy and Waves tried to exploit that. In the 61st minute Doonan played the ball to Eve O’Brien but she put it over the bar.
Minutes later Shels took the lead. Substitutes Hannah Healy and Rees combined and Rees found the back of the net with a stunning strike.
In the 67th minute Rees brought a fine save out of Badana. Healy tried her luck in the 72nd minute but once again the Waves netminder was equal to the strike.
Down the other end Waves tried to make McQuillan work but Shels defended well with Pierce solid.
