Hamric Stars As Shels Overcome Athlone
Shelbourne got off to a great start in their Avenir Sports All Island cup campaign with an emphatic 4-1 win over Athlone in Lissywollen tonight.
Kayla Hamric scored twice in the opening ten to give Shels a cushion early. Megan Smyth Lynch added one before Hamric got her hat-trick on the hour mark to put the cherry on top, Hazel Donegan netted a late consolation goal for The Town.
Two goals in the first ten minutes from Kayla Hamric had Shels two goals up at the half. In the 7th minute she met a corner from the left and made good contact. Although Muireann Devaney was in a position to head it away she couldn’t get the contact and it ended up deflecting off the Athlone captain in.
Just a minute later Hamric added her second. A ball was knocked inside from the right wing and Julia Weithofer failed to deal with it. Hamric punished her and although her shot was right at Nyla Peterkin, it went right in. A dream start for Shels whilst Athlone will have been kicking themselves.
A unique situation came about in the tenth minute. Torrential rain as well as lightning and thunder had the players playing in a storm so in the interest of safety, referee Mark Patchell called a delay. This lasted about fifteen minutes before the teams came back out. Athlone would create good chances on a few occasions before half time but ultimately couldn’t put it in and went in two goals down.
The inability to get at least one ultimately killed Athlone off as they were punished twice by Shels before the hour mark. In the 56th minute Keeva Keenan played a gorgeous through ball to Megan Smyth Lynch, who bet the offside trap. It was a routine finish which essentially put it out of Athlone’s reach.
Smyth Lynch turned provider for Hamric to finish off the hat trick three minutes later when she found her at the back post. Hamric’s shot should have been routine for Peterkin but the Athlone keeper made an error and the ball went in. She won’t want to see that one back.
The tempo was gone at this stage and Shels coasted to victory. They got a consolation in injury time when Molloy found Hazel Donegan with a cross from the right and the substitute had a tap in. Athlone travel to Galway next whilst Shels face Linfield.

Full time.
Goal! Roisin Molloy plays it to Hazel Donegan for a tap in. Consolation goal.
Two minutes added on.
Ten minutes to go. No tempo at all really.
Hewitt makes a quadruple substitution. Empties the bench.
Goal! Hamric has a hat trick! Smyth Lynch plays it to the back stick and her shot is dropped by Peterkin and it goes right in. Bad mistake.
Goal! Keeva Keenan plays an absolutely beautiful ball inside to Smyth Lynch who puts it by Peterkin! Lethal stuff from Shels, who now have their arrows firmly pointed at victory.
Gibson is indeed going off. Kellie Brennan will be coming on.
Gibson has been down injured for a couple of minutes. Would be a nightmare for Athlone, who are left very hamstrung by exams at the minute.
Back underway.
Half time.
Singleton again sets Molloy down the right wing and she pulls it back for Devaney. Her shot from outside the box is just wide. Athlone creating good chances but likely need one before half time.
Another great chance for Athlone. Singleton bursts forward and plays Molloy down the right. Molloy again lobs it to the back stick and Gillian Keenan meets it but it's blocked off the line. Shels would want to prevent giving Molloy too much room.
Hamric lays it off to Smith Lynch and her effort is tipped over by Peterkin. Good strike and a good save.
Molloy bursts down the right wing and lobs it to the back stick. Gibson has a tap in but gets the contact all wrong. Has to score that.
There hasn't been major chances since play resumed. Athlone look on top but lack that killing instinct.
We're back. Play was delayed for roughly fifteen minutes.
Teams are warming up. Shels dugout is flooded so that will have to be dealt with before play can resume. Looking at roughly ten minutes until play resumes.
Play is delayed because of the weather. Set to resume once the storm here has passed.
Goal! Weithofer doesn't deal with a ball in and Hamric once again gets it and fires it in! Peterkin could've done better there.
Goal! Kayla Hamric meets a corner and it deflects off the head of Devaney and in! Early lead for the visitors.
It is absolutely pouring right now. It's like the teams are playing in a storm.
Leah Doyle gives the ball away to Scheriff and she's through but Stapleton bails out her team mate with a perfectly timed challenge.
We're off
There'll be a minutes silence beforehand.
Teams come out to thunder and rain. Kickoff on a very wet evening is nigh.
Some lightning flashes are occurring also.
Linfield and Galway comprise the rest of the group. That match is currently on and Galway lead 1-0.
Weather is unpredictable here too, with thunder coming earlier on. Conditions could get a bit hairy.
These two sides have become well acquainted since last season, facing off in both last years cup final and this years Presidents Cup. This will be their third meeting already this season.
