Glackin Saves Spot Kick To Seal Presidents Cup Berth for Athlone

Ciara Glackin saved the winning spot kick as Muireann Devaney's penalty ensured Athlone Town won the first ever Women’s Presidents Cup following a 5-4 win over Shelbourne on penalties in Lissywollen this evening.

Shelbourne took an early two goal lead but Athlone managed to get back into it. After the 90, Ciara Glackin saved Christie Gray’s penalty to be the hero.

This couldn’t have started much worse for Athlone. Just eight minutes in, Shelbourne took the lead after Alex Kavanagh played a ball into Noelle Murray. Murray managed to control an awkward one, turning and hitting it on the half volley. It dipped over Nyla Peterkin and Shels had the lead.

Just five minutes later it went from bad to worse. Siobhan Killeen bombed down the right wing and her eventual cross was deemed to have hit Shauna Brennan’s arm. Alex Kavanagh stepped up and slotted in to give Shels a two goal lead. This felt very much like last years’ cup final.

The rest of this half was fairly tame until Athlone’s goal. Jemma Quinn had a couple of decent chances but nothing concrete. Muireann Devaney had to have her say for this one to heat back up.

In the 37th minute, Athlone dispossessed Shels playing it out from the back. Roisin Molloy was played through and held it up. She pulled it back to Scarlett Heron, who found Devaney. The Leitrim native turned and got a shot off, finding the net. From here it was game on.

Up until the hour mark or such, the second half matched the first in terms of a lack in intensity. Megan Smyth Lynch and Chloe Singleton had some good chances in this period but nothing concrete. Athlone ultimately equalised through a gift.

In the 69th minute, the ball found its way to Courtney Maguire who went to play a routine pass. The Shels goalie was sloppy and had her pass bounce off Roisin Molloy and right into the net. As much of a gift it was, Athlone didn’t care.

The game was intense the rest of the way and tempers flared but chances were few. After the 90 minutes we went straight to penalties where it was decided.

Both sides nailed the first three penalties but it got interesting when Kellie Brennan missed for Athlone. Noelle Murray made it 4-3, meaning Kate Slevin had to score and she did. Ciara Glackin then saved Shels 5th penalty from Ruvimbo Mucherera to bring us to sudden death.

Muireann Devaney made it 5-4 and then Glackin denied Christie Gray to win it. And with that save, Athlone Town won the first ever Women’s Presidents Cup.
