Torture For Athlone As Gray Shades It For Shels

A late Christie Gray header was enough to earn Shelbourne all three points and despite a strong penalty claim for a crazy off the ball incident they held on for an important win which keeps them in touch with the challengers for their league title.

The first real opportunity of the half arrived after 10 minutes as a great piece of skill allowed Maddie Gibson enough space to send in a cross but fellow American Dana Scheriff wasnt’ able to direct her header on goal.

The ball was returned back into the box in the next phase of play but Gibson was adjudged to have fouled the Shel’s defender as she reached for the ball..

Moments later there was another opportunity from Athlone as Chloe Singleton had a pot shot from distance with better options available. It was never really in danger of bothering Maguire in the Shelbourne goal.

Athlone continued their dominance of possession and opportuniAnd then there were three. A through ball from Athlone finds Dana Scheriff who can't keep her effort down. Officials award a corner to the home side but they can't make the set piece count.

With almost twenty minutes on the clock Shels had their first real threat on goal as a great run from Christie Gray gave her space to find Jemma Quinn in the box. The forward wasn’t able to control her header at the end of the driven cross and it went wide for a goal kick.

Another ball over the top approaching the half hour mark almost released both Muireann Devaney and Dana Scheriff but the ball ran through to Maguire who sends it to the safety of the sideline.

Five minutes later Shelbourne execute a lovely move from a throw in, the ball finds the feet of Smyth Lynch who uses some magical footwork to create a yard of space and she finds the target but Peterkin is equal to it pushing it over the bar. The resulting corner isn't dealt with well by the keeper and Shels almost poke it home but the home side survive and count their blessings to go in to the break goalless.

Athlone came closed to opening the scoring as Kellie Brennan put Maguire under pressure and her sliced kick let Chloe Singleton onto the ball in the box. A wild Maguire lunge almost gives away a penalty but Singleton stays on her feet and her snatched effort rebounds off the post to save the keeper’s blushes.

The best move of the half sees a combination of Roisin Molloy and Dana Scheriff down the right wing before finding Maddie Gibson who’s slide rule pass to Muireann Devaney but the Leitrim player's effort was just off target but it had Maguire worried.

It was a corner from Shelbourne which seemed to cause some confusion in the box for Athlone, no one attacked the ball and it was left at the back post for Christie Gray to direct it home and send her team mates wild with excitement with just fifteen minutes remaining.

Moments later a big talking point cropped up as an innocuous ball over the top came to nothing with Keeva Keenan shielding the ball from Roisin Molloy but after Peterkin had dealt with the danger Keenan appeared to shove the Sligo native over in the box. The Athlone bench was furious and Tommy Hewitt gained a yellow card for his protestations.

Shelbourne would hold on without threatening to add to their solitary strike and mean they left Athlone Town just three points off the top of the table, while Athlone drop ground on the top of the table falling to 6th place in the league.
