Lyons Brace Seals The points For Rovers
An Andy Lyons brace got Shamrock Rovers’ title defence back on track with a 3-0 win over Finn Harps in Ballybofey.
Rovers dominated the first half with Graham Burke having three great chances, all from outside the 18-yard box. Harps goalkeeper Mark McGinley was equal to them however and he along with Conor Tourish put in heroic performances to keep Harps on level terms.
Rovers got their breakthrough however on the stroke of half-time when Jack Byrne’s corner was met by Andy Lyons at the near post and his powerful header dealt the hosts a sickening blow going into the interval.
Finn Harps were much better going forward in the second half with Ethan Boyle having the pick of the chances on the hour mark when his header hit the Rovers crossbar before Alan Mannus tipped the ball over.
Eric McWoods would also go close for the host minutes later when he used his pace and power to get inside the box and get shot away which beat Alan Mannus but fizzed just left and wide of the goal.
It was Rovers who would strike again in the 79th minute however when Andy Lyons showed his quality to get his and the visitors second goal after some beautiful link up play with Alan Gaffney to essentially end the game as a contest.
Mark McGinley compounded Ollie Horgans’s woes on eighty-five minutes when he was sent off for bringing down Graham Burke inside the box. He scored the resulting penalty with Bastien Hery being forced to play in goal for the conclusion of the game due to Harps having already used up their three substitutes.
The Donegal side were in damage limitation mode for the final few minutes as Rovers eased to a 3-0 win to get their title defence back on track at Finn Park.

Full time at Finn Park and a comfortable win for Rovers. Finn Harps were competitive up until the second goal and the red card was needless. Rovers get their title defence back on track with a 3-0 win.
Deep into injury time now but no indication from the fourth occasion how much they'll play.
Bastien Hery is in goal for Harps as they have used up their subs already.
Graham Burke tucks home the penalty. 3-0
Penalty for Rovers and McGinley is sent off for Harps.
Andy Lyons gets his second with a real touch of quality. 2-0 Rovers and probably the three points wrapped up.
Timlin and Hery on for Harps instead of McWoods and Carillo.
Yellow card for Roberto Lopes for shall we say, a professional foul there to keep Rovers ahead.
Lee Grace comes off for Sean Gannon for Rovers.
Great save from McGinley from Burke once again. Great battle between these two tonight.
Mcwoods goes very close to levelling the game. He uses his pace and power to dodge the Rovers defence but his shot slides just past the left hand post.
Excellent defending from Tourish who manages to rob the ball from Gaffney who was through on goal at the near post to stop a certain goal.
Ethan Boyle goes close for Harps with a header from Rob Slevin's cross. The ball hits the bar before Mannus tips it over the bar for a corner which is cleared.
A yellow for Richie Towell which is perhaps a bit harsh considering it came from a collision with McGinley as they went to compete for a cross.
No real chances so far for either side in the second half. Rovers being a goal up, are happy to keep the ball and play at their own pace and control the game.
Conor Tourish went down with a knock for Harps. But much to Ollie Horgan's relief, he gets up and seems to be ok.
Underway for the second half. Rob Slevin on for Alkan for Finn Harps.
Players beginning to come out for the second half.
A real sickner for Harps at the end of the first half but on the balance of play, Rovers deserve to lead at the break.
Goal for Shamrock Rovers on the stroke of Shamrock Rovers. A great corner put in by Jack Byrne and Andy Lyons beats everyone at the near post to put the visitors ahead.
Three minutes of added time here at Finn Park.
Close call for Harps there. Gaffney flicks the ball over his shoulder and flashes a shot across the face of goal and out for a throw.
Conor Tourish has been fantastic for Finn Harps so far tonight. The defender has along with Mark McGinley, been the reason for Harps still being on level terms.
Ryan Rainey forced off injured after picking up a knock. Yousef Mahdy comes on in his place.
Rovers beginning to take control again, penning Finn Harps inside their own half. Jack Byrne conducting the attacks in midfield. Harps resolute in defence so far however.
Burke and McGinley having their own battle so far. Another great turn and shot from the Rovers striker but McGinley makes another great save.
Another chance for Graham Burke for Rovers. Jack Byrne feeds a lovely ball into his feet and fires a similar effort to earlier which McGinley is equal to once more. Entertaining first 20 minutes or so at Finn Park.
Much better from Finn Harps in the past couple of minutes, Barry McNamee has been influential for the hosts in midfield who wins a corner. Mihalijevic gets a shot away from the resulting corner but it's cleared.
N'zeyi with a great chance for Harps, beautiful footwork to get away from the Rovers defence, the looks to have either hit the post or the placards beside the goal. Some effort though.
All Rovers early on with the hosts struggling to get a hold of the ball. A first corner for the visitors is cleared but Harps under a lot of pressure early on.
Graham Burke with the first chance for Rovers, hitting it on the half volley from just outside the 18 yard box, McGinley does well to palm the ball away.
