Redmond Header Snatches Three Points From The Students

A Joe Redmond header just before the interval was enough to give St. Patrick’s Athletic all three points over UCD AFC this evening at the UCD Bowl.

Despite seeing plenty of the ball throughout, Jon Daly’s side didn’t have it all their own way with UCD producing one of the better displays of their disappointing season.

However, while fellow title rivals faced each other elsewhere in the league this evening, the Saints secured the win after a Jake Mulraney corner in the 43rd minute found Redmond with loads of space at the back post who easily headed home.

As expected, St. Pat’s had plenty of early possession but after Lennon hit the game's first shot way over the bar, UCD responded by firing the visitors an early warning.

Sean Brennan lined up a shot from just outside the area which was blocked by the Pat’s defence only for the ball to land favourably for winger Ciaran Behan. UCD’s number 10 looked for the far top corner but his effort went wide of the post.

Five minutes later it was Dara Keane’s turn to see an effort go narrowly wide after being given acres of space to shoot just outside the area.

The visitors continued to probe around the UCD box but found very little space between the lines. The Students were very compact with their whole side often being behind the ball the entire time they were out of possession.

They continued to cause Jon Daly’s side problems on the break too. Lyness was on hand to make a great low save after a Sean Brennan freekick found the head of Jack Keaney but it was pushed around the post.

The frustrations of the large travelling fans continued to grow as the half progressed with the Saints seeing plenty of crosses into the box finding UCD heads and some wayward forward passes.

However, they got the breakthrough just before the interval. A Jake Mulraney corner found Joe Redmond in acres of space at the back post after his marker, Kinsella-Bishop slipped as the corner was taken. It was an easy finish for the away side’s captain for the evening who led his side in 1-0 up at the break.

The second half started in a similar fashion as the first. The first meaningful chance of the half came at the hour mark when Mulraney combined a one-two with Murphy before he let fly from just over 20 yards out. The midfielder saw his deflected effort go just wide of the post.

The game began to open up in the latter stages as UCD made some attacking changes and emerged from their defensive shape. However, this didn’t give Pat’s more chances and they were saved by the bar in the last few minutes.

In the 81st minute, Sean Brennan was first to test Lyness who saved well but the ball was still in the mix. Kinsella-Bishop was quick to the ball and managed to turn and shoot inside the area. His low shot rattled the far post.

Still, the danger wasn’t clear as Higgins had one more effort from the rebound but again Lyness was alive to the danger and the travelling contingent breathed a sigh of relief.

In the final few minutes, UCD threw men forward while the Saints continued to look for a second to kill the game off meaning it was an exciting end to the game despite the cutting edge from both sides.

Ultimately, no late goal came for either side meaning St. Pat’s got the three points they came for, albeit they didn’t make it easy for themselves. The result keeps Jon Daly’s side just four points behind league leaders Shamrock Rovers. They have another Dublin derby next week as they travel to Tolka Park to face Shelbourne.

Plenty of positives for UCD, however. They needed a reaction after a poor cup defeat earlier in the week and Andy Myler certainly got a response from his players. Next up for the Students is a trip to Weaver’s Park to face Drogheda United.

Former UCD men Lonergan and Nolan replace Carty and Lennon. Meanwhile UCD introduce Harvey O'Brien.

  • 81'

So close! Very unfortunate for UCD as Brennan's shot is saved by Lyness but falls to Kinsella-Bishop who turns and rattled the post with a great effort. Its not done however as Higgins gets the rebound but again Lyness saves.

  • 78'

Another double change for the Students as Mikey Raggett and Harry Curtis replace Norris and Dempsey.

  • 76'

Tempo has increased here with UCD having to come out of their defensive shape more. Mulraney had a chance to shoot but tried to get it on his favoured left foot so the shot was blocked.

  • 72'

Double change for UCD as Doyle and Higgins replace Behan and Verdon.

  • 69'

First change of the evening as Mark Doyle replaces Adam Murphy.

  • 68'

Clear pull of a Pat\'s player on the edge of the box has their fans rightfully incensed but the referee misses it.

  • 60'

Close! Mulraney feeds Murphy out side who returns the ball back and the midfielders deflected effort goes narrowly wide.

  • 55'

McLaughlin and Norris tussle down the right flank and the away fans appeal for a freekick but referee sees it the other way round. Respite for UCD after sustained Saints possession.

  • 53'

Long ball forward sees Forrester chasing in behind but Keaney judges it perfectly to head back to Healy in the UCD goal.

  • 50'

Similar start to the second half as the first with neither keeper yet to be tested since the restart.

  • 45'

Teams are back out and Behan gets us underway again.

  • 45'

Referee bring to an end a fascinating first half which Pat's lead but they haven't had it all their own way.

  • 43'

Finally Pat's have their breakthrough as Redmond gets acres of space at the back post to get on the end of a Mulraney corner. His marker Kinsella-Bishop appeared to slip as the set-piece was taken which explains why the centre-back had it so easy.

  • 41'

Moment of panic for McLaughlin on his debut as Wells finds Norris in behind the fullback who appeals for offside when it wasn't even close but Redmond comes across to deal with the threat.

  • 39'

More groans as McGrath dispossess Kinsella-Bishop and has an opportunity to set Pat's on the counter but his forward pass is cut out.

  • 36'

Groans all round as Jay Mc Grath shoots from way out and blasts it over the bar.

  • 32'

Big chance for UCD on the break as Norris wins it to set Brennan free. Under pressure he feeds Keane who gets a shot away which narrowly misses the target.

  • 31'

Just over 30 mins gone and UCD will be far happier than they were at this stage of the cup tie against Galway on Monday. They are working hard defensively and making it difficult to pass through.

  • 28'

Great cross from Lennon is headed over by Keaney for a Pat's corner. Mulraney takes but Keane heads it clear.

  • 25'

More like to from Pat's as Mulraney sets Leavy who has been lively down the right. His cross is put out for a corner which comes to nothing.

  • 22'

Mulraney has swapped wings to the left but it doesn't come off on this occasion as he blasts a cross way behind for a goal kick. UCD happy to restrict the visitors to efforts like that.

  • 20'

Behan delivers and it lands on top of Lyness who spills it. There is a moment of panic in the box but the Saints eventually clear it.

  • 19'

Push on Wells gives Brennan a chance to deliver a ball into the Pat's box. Keaney gets a head to the delivery by Lyness gets down low to push it around the post.

  • 16'

Great play from Mulraney to fashion a cross towards the UCD back post. Keaney misses it but Behan is on hand to clear.

  • 12'

Another UCD chance as Dara Keane flashes a low shot narrowly wide from just over 20 yards out but found himself in plenty of space. The large travelling fans are letting their side know exactly how they feel about that.

  • 11'

UCD are dropping very very deep when out of possession and the visitors are struggling to find space in their attacking third which is generally occupied by the entire UCD 11.

  • 7'

Chance! UCD's Behan goes close as the ball lands favourably for the winger just inside the box after Sean Brennan saw a shot deflected. The ball goes wide around the far post but a warning for Pat's there.

  • 6'

First shot goes to Jamie Lennon from distance after being teed up by Murphy. The defensive midfielder blasts the ball high over the bar, however.

  • 5'

UCD hardly have a touch as Pat's stroke the ball around confidently in the early stages.

  • 2'

First taste of LOI action for McLaughlin is to clean out Norris and UCD earn a freekick in their own half.

  • 1'

The visitors get us underway at the Bowl!

  • Teams are out here at the Bowl and thankfully the rain has stopped so unlike last week this game shout reach its conclusion!

  • Interesting to see how Ryan McLaughlin fares on his Pat's debut tonight. The 28-year-old right back spent five years at Premier League giants Liverpool before a number of spells with various English teams. He also has five Northern Ireland caps to his name but hasn't kicked a ball competitively since leaving Morecambe back in September last year.

  • Meanwhile, for the travelling St. Pat's side Sam Curtis, Jay McClelland and Mark Doyle drop out from the side that beat Derry City on penalties in the FAI Cup last weekend. Kian Leavy and Jake Mulraney enter the fray while the Saints' new signing in former Liverpool academy player Ryan McLaughlin makes his debut.

  • Team news is out and its three changes a piece. For UCD, Lorcan Healy replaces Kian Moore in nets while Ciarán Behan and Jesse Dempsey enter the side in place of Michael Gallagher and Brendan Barr.
