Match Report

Pats make light work of Students

An early opener and a brace from Noah Lewis on either side of the interval was enough to give St. Patrick’s Athletic all three points at the UCD Bowl this evening against UCD AFC.

Jon Daly’s side continued their fine run of form and made a strong start to proceedings tonight. The visitors were rewarded with a goal in the opening minutes as Conor Carthy headed home a Ben McCormack corner from close range.

On the stroke of half-time, they struck again in a very similar fashion with substitute Noah Lewis on hand this time to finish with a simple header. Again in the second half, Lewis struck with another header from a corner to seal the deal for the away side.

St Pats made five changes to the side that beat Dundalk a week beforehand but they still managed to come flying out of the blocks early on and opened the scoring after just 7 minutes.

A Ben McCormack corner landed right in front of the UCD goal but somehow, Conor Carty managed to rise above both Dara Keane and UCD keeper Lorcan Healy to head home from close range.

The away side continued the pressure immediately after and former UCD man Jason McClelland almost doubled the lead minutes later after he connected to a cross with a lovely volley, but Healy was alive to the danger.

Just before the half-hour mark, Jay McGrath picked out Forrester with a lovely long ball. The Athletic captain struck from the side of the UCD box but his effort narrowly missed the far corner. Healy again was then forced into a save when the ball dropped kindly to McClelland but Healy did very well to save the close-range shot.

Having conceded early on from a corner, you’d think the Students had learned their lesson but just before halftime, they conceded almost a carbon copy goal from the opener.

Having replaced the injured Jay McGrath two minutes previously, substitute Noah Lewis found himself largely unmarked at the back post and headed home easily from another Ben McCormack delivery. Lorcan Healy may have been impeded by Brockbank for the set-piece but the referee Gavin Colfer was unmoved.

UCD made a double change and introduced Regan and Gallagher at the interval which seemed to give the Students more of a foothold after the restart. However, any hopes of getting something out of the game were soon dashed when Lewis got his second of the game.

Almost a replica of the previous two goals, particularly the second, McCormack found Lewis once again at the back post from a corner. This time the defender rose above the hapless Kinsella-Bishop to put the game beyond UCD’s reach.

It should have been four just minutes later, McCormack found himself with a relatively simple tap-in at the back post with the UCD defenders and goalkeeper left scrambling. Despite racking up three assists for the evening, the midfielder couldn’t add a goal to his tally as he only found the woodwork.

UCD managed to get a consolation goal late on. The substitutes combined on this occasion as Alex Nolan fed Kinsella-Bishop who fired home a good finish to get this third league goal of the season. It didn’t do much to spoil the Saints’ party, however, and Andy Myler will be furious to concede three similar set-piece goals in one game.

Next up for the Students is a trip to Oriel Park to face Dundalk F.C. Meanwhile, Jon Daly will be pleased his side didn’t have to exert themselves too much this evening ahead of a big Monday night game against Derry City at Richmond Park.

  • 94'

Fulltime here at the Bowl it finishes UCD AFC 1-3 St Patrick's Athletic. Match report to follow.

  • 93'

Forrester gets a nice strike away outside the box but Healy gets down to save.

  • 91'

Lewis again gets his head to this one but it hits the bar before the referee gives UCD a freekick out with Lewis judged to have fouled the UCD defender.

  • 90'

Wells is alive this time to intercept and deny Lonergan at the back post. That brings the total corners of the game to 14, most of which caused UCD a lot of problems.

  • 86'

UCD get one back as Danu Kinsella-Bishop hammers home a pullback from Alex Nolan. Likely just a consolation goal for the Students.

  • 83'

Alex Nolan strikes from range to force a rare save out of Dean Lyness.

  • 78'

Carty almost finds Lonergan at the back post but Evan Osam does well and is alive to the danger to clear.

  • 74'

UCD's turn to make a double change as Nolan and O'Connor replace Norris and Babb.

  • 72'

Double change for Pats as Mason Melia and Serge Atakayi replace Jamie Lennon and Adam Murphy.

  • 67'

Post! This is a shocking miss from McCormack who has a tap in at the back post but somehow finds the woodwork.

  • 66'

If the first and second goals were similar, the second and third were basically identical. McCormack finds Lewis at the back post who easily rises above Kinsella-Bishop and the game is out of sight for the Students. Certainly missing the presence of captain Jack Keaney for those moments.

  • 63'

Another corner goal and a second from Noah Lewis! These set-pieces are a huge problem for the Students.

  • 63'

Instant impact from Lonergan who combines with Forrester before letting fly outside the box. His shot is blocked by Wells for a Saints corner.

  • 60'

Danu Kinsella-Bishop is introduced for UCD in place of Jake Doyle. Meanwhile former UCD man Thomas Lonergan is introduced for St Pats along with Timmermans.

  • 58'

A good freekick delivery from Behan earns UCD a corner but Lewis does very well to rise highest to clear the ball. He has been very solid since his introduction in the first half.

  • 56'

UCD have certainly got more control of the ball this half as the changes seemed to have done the trick in getting a foothold albeit without putting Lyness under pressure in the Saints' net.

  • 48'

Behan shoots on goal but its blocked by Lewis. Appeals for a handball but replays show it was off Lewis' side and the referee gets that one right. UCD appear to be looking to commit more bodies forward this half.

  • 45'

Behan gets us back underway at the Bowl! Double change for the Students as Luke O'Regan and Michael Gallagher replace Harvey O'Brien and Colin Bolton.

  • 47'

Comes to nothing and the halftime whistle sounds. UCD AFC 0-2 St Patrick's Athletic.

  • 46'

Skillful football from Colin Bolton earns UCD a corner just before the whistle.

  • 45'

2 additional minutes here at the Bowl.

  • 41'

He is only on 2 minutes and Lewis doubles Pats' lead! It's almost a carbon copy of the opener as McCormack delivers a corner which finds Lewis with a simple header at the back post.

  • 39'

Jay McGrath injured himself while defending that corner and is replaced by Noah Lewis.

  • 37'

Positive play from Ciaran Behan down the right wing earns UCD a corner but Pats clear their lines.

  • 35'

Pats work a routine from the training ground which ends in a shot from McCormack but it doesn't go to plan as the midfielder skies it way way over the bar.

  • 34'

Norris gets the first booking of the game for bringing down the charging McClelland.

  • 32'

Another great save from Healy who gets down low to snuff out McClelland's close range effort.

  • 30'

The visitors continue to dominate the ball with perhaps a little less intensity than the opening 15 minutes. Carty's opener was the only goal in the entire Premier Division in all the games' opening half hour.

  • 27'

Close! A long ball from Jay McGrath finds Chris Forrester down the left side of the UCD box and he pulls the trigger which goes narrowly wide of the far post.

  • 23'

Lorcan Healy living dangerously passing out from the back as Conor Carty almost intercepts his delayed pass right in front of the goal line.

  • 18'

A great ball from deep by Barr spurs UCD's first meaningful attack which culminates in Jake Doyle forcing a save out of Lyness in the Pats net.

  • 12'

83% possession for the visitors in the opening few minutes which tells you all you need to know about the proceedings here at the Bowl.

  • 10'

Almost 2-0! Lorcan Healy makes a great save after McClelland connects with a cross to the back post.

  • 7'

And they convert from the third corner! Conor Carty gets his head on a Ben McCormack corner, somehow beating Dara Keane and goalkeeper Lorcan Healy.

  • 6'

Plenty of pressure down the left flank for the visitors and they get their third corner in 6 minutes down that side.

  • 3'

A St Pats corner is only flapped away by Lorcan Healy unconvincingly but is eventually cleared.

  • 1'

Conor Carty gets us underway at the Bowl for the away side!

  • The teams emerge to a sunny UCD Bowl with plenty of travelling St Pats fans filling the stands!

  • Lots of young Irish talent in both sides today. For the visitors it includes Ireland U21 defenders Sam Curtis and Jay McGrath and Ireland U19 midfielder Adam Murphy. Meanwhile, Andy Myler hands a start to Daniel Babb who featured for the Irish under 17's in their European Championships campaign.

  • Plenty of changes also for UCD as Lorcan Healy, Brendan Barr, Daniel Babb and Colin Bolton are introduced to replace Moore, Nolan, Higgins and the suspended club captain Jack Keaney.

  • Jon Daly makes 5 changes to his Pat's side that beat Dundalk last week. McGrath, McClelland, McCormack and Carty are all introduced while Harry Brockbank makes his first start of the season.

  • Good evening and welcome to FinalWhistle.ie coverage of tonight's SSE Airtricity League Premier Division game between UCD AFC and St. Patrick's Athletic. I'm Conor Paterson and I'll be bringing you live updates throughout and a match report after the full time whistle.
