Match Report

UCD equalise at the death to halt Bohs title challenge

A late equaliser from substitute Jake Doyle cancelled out Johnathan Afolabi’s opener as UCD played out a 1-1 draw with Bohemian F.C this evening at the UCD Bowl.

After a frustrating first half which produced few chances for either side, a wonderful team goal and poachers finish from Afolabi was enough to give table toppers Bohs the lead. The Students were not deterred however and managed to equalise in the 88th minute to earn a valuable point.

Full of confidence, Bohs came flying out of the traps and had two great chances in the opening four minutes. Firstly, after some good build-up from McDaid down the left wing the ball fell to Dean Williams who produced a lovely turn on the 6-yard box before Kian Moore produced a wonderful save to tip the effort over the bar.

The danger was not cleared, however, as the subsequent corner found O’Sullivan at the back post who directed the effort back into the middle of the box. UCD were unable to clear the ball and it eventually made its way to Grant Horton. From close range, the fullback directed his effort goalwards and once again Moore was there to the rescue.

Despite the early pressure UCD managed to compose themselves and got to grips with the Bohs attack. The Students were brave in possession and despite not producing much to trouble James Talbot in the goal, they were able to hold the ball deep in the opposition half.

The lack of chances frustrated the impressive travelling crowd as the half progressed and they were incensed just after the half-hour mark when a late tackle on Adam McDonnell from Danu Kinsella-Bishop did not result in the striker's second yellow card of the game.

There were further appeals on the brink of the interval when Dean Williams went down in the UCD box under close attention from UCD captain Jack Keaney but again the referee was unmoved.

A change for Bohs proved to be a catalyst for the opener and what a team goal it was. Dylan Connolly burst down the right flank before his cross found Declan McDaid at the far post. The winger cushioned the ball beautifully with his first touch back across goal right in the path of Afolabi who coolly slotted home.

A raft of changes for both sides disrupted the momentum of the game as the second half progressed as Bohs dominated possession without creating too many meaningful chances. On more than one occasion their wingers were perhaps too selfless as they burst down their wings before squaring the ball when perhaps the shot was the better option.

UCD capitalised on the away side's failure to kill the game off in the 88th minute. Danny Norris was released down the left wing before a low cross found Jake Doyle. The striker showed great composure to take his time and pick his spot and helped UCD take an important point from the visit of the league leaders.

After taking the lead, Bohs will be disappointed not to come away with the win but they only have themselves to blame after not killing the game off and in truth didn’t create as many chances as you would expect from a team in such good form. Declan Devine will be hoping to get back to winning ways on Monday night as they host Cork City in Dalymount.

Meanwhile, UCD will return to the Bowl to face Dundalk on Monday and can look to build on their improving home form.

  • 94'

And there is the final whistle, an excellent point for UCD as it finishes 1-1. Match report to follow.

  • 90'

4 additional minutes at the Bowl.

  • 88'

And there it is! UCD equalise through Jake Doyle. Danny Norris bursts down the left wing and a low cross finds the substitute who composes himself and slots home!

  • 86'

First sign of life from UCD as Doyle collects a cross into the box but unable to get a clear shot on goal.

  • 84'

Jake Doyle is too eager and goes flying in on James Clarke. Can't have any complaints with the booking there.

  • 81'

Short pause as Horton is down after winning Bohs a freekick in their own half. UCD are yet to seriously trouble the away side but one goal and they are back in this.

  • 76'

Izekor is introduced in place of Donal Higgins as the Students look to mount a push for an equaliser.

  • 73'

Connoly bursts into the UCD area but perhaps was too selfless as he looks to find a pass rather than have a go himself. Comes to nothing in the end.

  • 71'

Great skill by Twardek to beat Nolan and burst into the box but ultimately the substitute runs out of pitch and is muscled off the ball by Keaney.

  • 68'

Bohs are huffing and puffing without really troubling Moore but they are fairly comfortable with more possession.

  • 62'

Twardek and Clarke on for Bohs in place of McDonnell and McDaid.

  • 60'

Jake Doyle replaces Sami Clarke for UCD.

  • 58'

Sloppy from Gallagher who sells Keaney short and puts McDaid in acres of space on the left. He selflessly tries to square the ball but can't find a Bohs player.

  • 56'

Tough for UCD after such a positive first half but it's the quality that separates the two sides. A lovely team goal from the visitors.

  • 53'

Bohs get the breakthrough! It's the substitute Afolabi with the opener after some great play down the right wing the cross finds McDaid at the back post. The winger cushions the ball beautifully first time right into the path of the substitute who fires past Moore.

  • 49'

Great football from UCD as Gallagher feeds Barr down the right wing who turns Radknowski but his shot is blocked once he gets in the box.

  • 45'

Double change for Bohs as Afolabi and Buckley replace O'Sullivan and McManus, Meanwhile Behan replaces Kinsella-Bishop for UCD.

  • 48'

Nice spell of possession just before the whistle comes to nothing for Bohs as the referee blows up for halftime.

  • 45'

3 additional minutes here at the Bowl.

  • 44'

Dean Williams goes down in the UCD box adamant he is clipped by Keaney but despite the Bohs fans' appeals, the referee awards a goal kick. Keaney appeals for a booking for diving so nobody is happy!

  • 41'

Looks like Mark Dignam\'s day is done as he hobbles off after receiving treatment. Michael Gallagher replaces him and Brandon Barr will shift from fullback to centre-mid.

  • 37'

McDonnell is back on but not moving too well, that crunching tackle certainly stung the midfielder.

  • 34'

Plenty of vigour in that UCD attack which required an excellent sliding tackle from Horton to stop Kinsella-Bishop who was bearing down on goal. The UCD striker subsequently goes in late on McDonnell who makes a clearance and is perhaps lucky to avoid a second yellow card.

  • 31'

Warning for Bohs as Nolan wins the ball deep and feeds Norris who tries to square an open Kinsella-Bishop in the middle of the box but the pass is blocked.

  • 30'

Groans from the travelling Bohs fans as another back pass goes to Talbot. This will be music to UCD players ears who will be pleased with their opening half hour.

  • 29'

Bohs win a corner after a lovely ball from McManus to feed Connolly down the right wing. UCD captain Jack Keaney rises highest to win the header.

  • 24'

Yellow card for Kinsella-Bishop who caught Talbot late after a clearance.

  • 22'

John O'Sullivan has been dropping very deep in an attempt to make space for himself. The most Bohs have offered in the last few minutes are probing long balls which have caused the Students no problems.

  • 17'

The first yellow card of the game goes to Radkowski for a deliberate handball to stop a UCD counter-attack.

  • 14'

After those early chances, UCD have gotten to grips with Bohs and are fairly comfortable in possession albeit not creating much so far.

  • 4'

Moore again to the rescue, O'Sullivan gets a head on the subsequent corner at the back post which is not cleared. Horton is in the box and manages to direct the ball goalwards but is well blocked by the on-rushing Moore.

  • 3'

Good save from Moore to tip Williams' effort from close range over the bar. Great build up from McDaid down the left wing.

  • 1'

Norris gets us underway for the home side

  • Teams have emerged to a very sunny UCD Bowl as kickoff is just a minute away

  • Not only can Bohs strengthen their grip at the top of the Premier Division tonight, but they can make it 5 consecutive victories over the College. Andy Myler will be desperate to avoid that unwanted record and add to their one victory this season.

  • Tonight sees the first sold-out game of the season at the UCD Bowl. Buoyed by an impressive start to the season, the Bohs fans have crossed the city in good numbers and will be expecting their side to maintain their good form against a struggling UCD team.

  • Four changes for UCD from the side that lost 3-1 to Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds. Donal Higgins, Sami Clarke, Danny Norris and Danu Kinsella-Bishop are introduced.

  • Three changes for the travelling Bohemians side as Dean Williams, James McManus and Declan McManus who sealed the 2-0 victory at Drogheda last week are all introduced.

  • Good evening and welcome to FinalWhistle.ie coverage of tonight's SSE Airtricity League Premier Division clash between UCD AFC and hugh-flying Bohemians FC.
