Lonergan Brace Helps Seal Points For Pats

A Tommy Lonergan brace in the second half and a late Mason Melia goal was the killer touches that St. Patrick's Athletic had craved in this game and when called upon he put Dundalk to the sword to keep the Saints on course for Europe next season.

Two defensive lapses by the Lilywhites were punished by Lonergan but Dundalk will rue their missed opportunities in the first half which they dominated throughout.

The second half was a different story in a game that was a tale of two halves despite Daniel Kelly scoring to give the Saints a late scare but they need not have worried as Melia celebrated his 16th birthday with the best gift of all - three points more towards Europe.

The first sight of the goal came from the visitors as Daniel Kelly received the ball from the left by Daryl Horgan with his shot doing little to danger the Pats defence but forced the keeper to dive to cover the ball. Chris Forrester did have the ball in the back of the net but he was in an offside position with the goal marked off.

Dundalk continued to press with another set of crosses into the Pats area and saw Yli Kokko's cross just evading both Hoban and Kelly who were attacking the ball but neither could get a vital connection. The best chance of the half fell to Daniel Kelly as a clever Pat Hoban cut back to Kelly and forced a clever save from Dean Lyness who pushed it behind for a corner.

The second half was a completely different story.

Minutes into the second period the Saints took the lead as Hayden Muller was dispossessed and Tommy Lonergan broke free of his marker, he struck a low effort flashed across the face of the goal and into the net with Mulraney making sure it met its intended target of the back of the net.

Within seven minutes they had doubled their lead as a long ball once again caught Dundalk flat-footed as Tommy Lonergan got away from his tussle with Greg Sloggett and he raced onto the ball to cleverly lob the ball over Sheppard to score his second.

Dundalk were to get back into the game as Daniel Kelly made up for his miss in the first half to get on the scoresheet to give the Lilywhites a lifeline. A simple through ball from Archie Davies saw Kelly steer the ball past Lyness to reduce the deficit to one. The away side were reduced to ten men as Robbie Benson saw red late on with a second yellow card.

Mason Meliaa second-half substitute came on to celebrate his 16th birthday and in the embers of injury time, he was to make it even better. After being taken down in the area for a penalty he brushed himself off to slot the ball past Sheppard to make it a night to remember.

These three points not only effectively secure Europe – a late title race could be on.

  • REF WATCH: Tonight’s referee is Damien MacGraith, who will be assisted by Michelle O’Neill and Shane O’Brien with Gavin Colfer the fourth official. • SAINTS: St Pat’s have the second best home record in the division after Shamrock Rovers, who have played a game more. Their 27 scored is one less at home than Dundalk, who have played a game more.

  • SAINTS: St Pat’s have lost just 2 of their last 13 matches, including the 2-1 defeat away to Shelbourne last time out. • HEAD TO HEAD: Dundalk haven’t won at Richmond Park since May 2021 when they were 2-0 winners against Stephen O’Donnell’s St Pat’s when Jim Magilton was in charge. Since then they have made five visits to the Inchicore venue, losing three and drawing two.

  • HEAD TO HEAD: While Dundalk were 5-0 winners in the first meeting between the sides this season at Oriel Park back in March, the Lilywhites have won just 3 of the last 14 meetings with Pat’s. • O'DONNELL: Tonight is Stephen O’Donnell’s 8th time managing against St Pat’s – a club where he picked up his biggest victory in management by landing the 2021 FAI Cup for the Inchicore club. He has won 2, drew 3 and lost 2 but he has yet to win at Richmond Park since leaving here for Dundalk. His biggest victory as Dundalk boss came against the Inchicore club in their first meeting of this season on March 3rd when the Lilywhites were 5-0 winners at Oriel Park.

  • TEAM NEWS: Stephen O'Donnell has made four changes to the side which lost 4-0 in Galway last week with Greg Sloggett, Robbie Benson, Paul Doyle and John Martin coming in for Brownlie, Leahy, Malley and Durrant.

  • Good Evening from FinalWhistle HQ - Ciaran Callan here to bring you all the actions as the Saints take on the Lilywhites in Richmond Park.
