Match Report

Draw on Difficult Day for Dundalk

St Pat's and Dundalk played out what was an entertaining draw at Oriel Park, in a game where the news was more important off the pitch than on it.

The second half lit up the evening sky with Sam Bone opening up the scoring. In what was a spirited come back for Dundalk; Juniors equaliser could be if believed the last goal of Filippo Giovagnoli reign at Dundalk.

The Saints showed their attacking intent with McClelland displaying a clever training ground move, but his shot was deflected for a corner. Pat’s continued to threaten and former player Robbie Benson had an attempt that went over the bar.

As the half wore on it was Dundalk who was in the ascendency with Midtskogen who did excellently to turn in the area but his effort is deflected behind for a corner,. His target was Hoban who was ready to strike, but Lee Desmond was alert to cut out the danger.

Duffy created the best chance of the half as his cross was nearly met by Midskogen at the back post but it just flashed wide.

Pats took the game to the hosts in the second half, with Ronan Coughlan forcing an excellent save from Abibi before Boyle cleared for a corner. The visitors took the lead moments later with Benson sending in a pinpoint corner and Sam Bone rising highest to head excellently past Abibi.

Dundalk began to show intent in their play that has been almost missing for most of this season. Putting pressure on the visitors defence, Chris Shields went close after a corner sent in saw the midfielder find the ball at his feet with six yards out, however it went wide of the post.

Just seconds later Abibi was forced to make a smart save as Billy King on the half volley struck a shot at goal that Dundalk’s keeper could only tip over the bar. Patrick Hoban did excellently and hooked the ball over Desmond, but his effort couldn’t beat Jarvos and the ball fell to Junior who blazed his shot over the bar.

Billy King had an excellent chance to put the game to bed as he latched onto a through ball from Benson that Abibi had to save with his legs.

Dundalk’s pressure paid off when Junior equalised after a cross sent in fell to Daniel Cleary, his effort was going wide only for Junior to outstretch and slot it home from close range.

Michael Duffy had a chance to win it with a shot in the dying seconds only for former Dundalk man Paddy Barrett to clear off the line.

Stephen O’Donnell will feel that his charges did more than enough to claim all the points however there was a drive and spirit in that side that hasn’t been seen in a while. Green shoots of Spring may come yet for the Lilywhites.
