Match Report
10 Man Pats beat stubborn Dundalk
A late second half winner from substitute Conor Carty solidified St. Patrick’s Athletic position in 4th after a 2-1 win over Dundalk.
Rayhaan Tulloch had cancelled out Mark Doyle’s opener, but a brilliant Tommy Lonergan cross finished off expertly by Carty was enough to send the Saints three points clear of their opponents.
The hosts came flying out of the traps and dominated the opening half hour which Dundalk really struggled to deal with.
Mark Doyle found himself in great positions on numerous occasions throughout the half. First, he was slipped in by Breslin but his near post effort was saved by Nathan Shepperd.
The winger should have scored again when an Adam Murphy chip was deflected onto the crossbar before the ball broke to Doyle with the goal at his mercy, but he volleyed over.
He and St. Pat’s got their rewards minutes later however when a Jake Mulraney cross was parried by Shepperd right to the feet of Doyle who tapped home at the back post.
St. Pat’s should’ve added a second a minute later when Mark Doyle was played in but his cross was overhit and too high for Eoin Doyle inside the box.
Dundalk began to grow into the game and nearly equalised when captain Patrick Hoban cut inside but, fired straight at Dean Lyness who stood tall.
It wasn’t all positive for the Saints who lost two of their back four with Carl Axel Sjoberg going off early on followed by Tom Grivosti who looked to suffer a serious leg injury as he had to be stretchered off.
Dundalk boss O’Donnell made three changes at half time and instantly the away side looked a different side. A positive start was made even better when substitute Rayhaan Tulloch headed home all too easily into the far corner.
Things flipped on their head when Jake Mulraney was handed a straight red after 52 minutes for an altercation which resulted in Connor Malley also being booked.
Just as the game was heading for a draw, substitute Tommy Lonergan found himself chasing down a lost cause before winning it back and finding Carty at the back post who slid home in off the crossbar to send Richmond wild.
The hosts held on for a massive three points and now move onto UCD away next Friday whilst for Dundalk they remain in the capital as they travel to Shamrock Rovers.
The attendance tonight was 4,089.
