Coyle Propels Shels To Fifth
Mark Coyle’s first half goal moved Shelbourne up to fifth place in the Premier Division table as they extended their unbeaten run to seven games.
Both sides had chances to break the deadlock before Coyle’s strike five minutes from the break. Sligo keeper Conor Walsh saved a Jack Moylan penalty in the second half; Moylan had initially scored the penalty but it had to be retaken.
The home side started well but when Shelbourne settled into the game they began to press. In the eighth minute Evan Caffrey squandered a great chance to open the scoring; Moylan’s shot was parried by Walsh, Caffrey picked up the loose ball but somehow shot wide.
Harry Wood showed some good skill in the 18th minute but shot wide. In the 23rd minute Moylan’s effort was deflected out for a corner. Walsh then pulled off a great save to deny Caffrey minutes later.
Down the other end Pedrol Martelo passed to Reece Hutchinson but his effort was put out for a corner in the 34th minute. Minutes later Hutchinson hit a shot over the bar.
In the 40th minute Hood played the ball to Coyle and from distance he hit an excellent strike that went under the legs of Walsh and ended up in the net.
Just before the break Shels keeper Conor Kearns pulled off a fine save to deny Fabrice Hartmann from grabbing an equaliser for the home side.
In the 47th minute Kearns gave the ball away cheaply but made amends by making a great save from Stefan Radosavljevic as the home side started the second half brightly.
Hartmann’s free in the 71st minute hit the wall, Frank Liivak picked up the rebound but it went wide. Hartmann’s effort was put out for a corner in the 79th minute. From that corner Martelo’s header brought a great save out of the Shels netminder.
Shels were awarded a rather soft penalty in the 81st minute when Moylan went down in the box. He put away the spot-kick but it had to be retaken because a Shels player moved too quickly before the penalty. On the second attempt Moylan’s penalty was saved by Walsh.
Despite having possession Sligo just couldn’t get an equaliser and they drop to eighth in the table.
