Sligo Rovers take points back west after beating Shels
Sligo Rovers continued their recent spell of form with a commanding win over Shelbourne at Tolka Park this evening.
Goals in each half were enough to seal the three points for Sligo, two wins on the spin giving them renewed optimism in the camp.
Frank Liivak and Aidan Keena, the danger men for Sligo, once again come up top trumps for the Bit O Red, finding those important game-changing strikes.
Shane Farrell ignited the danger early for the hosts, with two quick efforts after three minutes, Luke McNicholas had to save the first, the second however was wide. Sean Boyd had another great effort for the hosts, but it just went to the otherside of the post.
Both were cancelling the other out as neither had clear cut chances, that was until Nando Pijnaker made a great run to turn provider for Frank Liivak, his great finish from a tight angle eluded Brendan Clarke after 24 minutes.
Seconds after Sligo scored Shelbourne spurred a great chance at the other end, with Boyd just heading wide. Sligo ended the half with two Keena efforts both however again missed the target.
Brendan Clarke was called upon seven minutes after the restart, a pass going astray in the midfield that Sligo turned over, Liivak slipped the ball in behind for Max Mata, Clarke closed him down well to save his dinked effort as Shels cleared the lines.
Just before the hour mark it looked like Shelbourne had equalised through Jack Moylan, he unleashed a strike from distance but it went wide, it looked like it may have just creeped in but Shels again were left chasing.
After 66 minutes Sligo looked to have put the game to bed, Keena with another for his tally this season, robbing Shelbourne of possession he broke clear and rifled one into the net past Clarke.
Shels could have added a goal late in the tie, John Ross Wilson had an effort palmed by McNicholas, Boyd headed the rebound but missed the mark however the flag was up. Seven minutes from time Matty Smith crossed which McNicholas had to get fingers too, it fell to the back post but a Shels man in the way saw an effort blocked out for a goal kick.
Shelbourne threw everyone forward, Clarke roaming around half way at times as they looked to pull something back, they had the chances, just could not get them into the net, Sligo defended well to their credit, to keep a clean sheet and also take the points back West.
