Match Report

Shelbourne hit Sligo for Six at the Showgrounds

Shels controlled this game at the Showgrounds from start to finish as they ran out comfortable 6-0 winners over a lacklustre Sligo Rovers side in the League of Ireland Women’s Premier Division this evening.

Sligo did enjoy some possession in the early stages but it was Shels who opened the scoring on nine minutes. A late challenge in the box from Amy Roddy on Jemma Quinn gave Noelle Murray the opportunity to score from the penalty spot and she left Bonnie McKiernan rooted to the spot as he stroked it home from 12 yards.

Five minutes later it was game over. Christie Gray who had rescued a win for Shels two weeks ago in Athlone was again on hand at the back post to apply the finish. Great work from Smyth Lynch down the left hand side was centred powerfully but the ball evaded both Quinn and keeper McKiernan and the Canadian pushed it into the empty net from an acute angle.

The nail was finally driven into the Sligo Rovers challenge when a long punt from Maguire was allowed to bounce. Jemma Quinn rose highest to push the ball beyond the last defender and lofted the ball over the stranded McKiernan to put the visitors ahead at the break.

Both sides rang the changes but it had little effect on the sides as Shels continued to steam roll through the home side.

Ireland U16 Manager Megan Smyth Lynch was very lucky to find the bottom corner of the net from a long range free as Shels increased their lead to four before a calamity of errors led to the fifth.

Good work from Murray and substitute Siobhan Killeen saw the All Ireland Champions cross deflected goalwards by Keela Scanlon and a scrambling Bonnie McKiernan as the ball slid across the line.

Jemma Quinn applied the final score after a powerful run down the right hand side and a blistering finish to the roof of the net past the beleaguered McKiernan to hit their hosts for six.

Keeva Keenan did have a very late opportunity to put the travelling Shel’s fans into seventh heaven but her rasping shot came back of the woodwork. A goal which her performance would have warranted. The only negative was Jessie Stapleton being helped off the field after a tough challenge on Emma Doherty in injury time.

Shels entertain their traditional rivals Peamount in a top of the table clash next weekend while Sligo Rovers will need to pick themselves up to face the trip to Treaty in two weeks time.

  • 92'

Full time here as Shelbourne go home with all three points.

  • 90'

Jessie Stapleton has gone down holding her arm. Genuine concern as she leaves the field for the last two minutes here.

  • 68'

Sligo Rovers almost earn a consolation. A great quick break from Emma Doherty forces a great block from Maggie Pierce and the eventual opportunity to have another crack falls to Casey Howe but her effort is always going over the bar. Sligo have rang the changes but it's difficult to see a way back into the game for the home side.

  • 66'

They shoot horses!!! This game is descending into a bit of procession for Shels as good work from Noelle Murray and Siobhan Killeen forces and own goal off a combination of Sarah Kiernan who deflects the ball goalwards and despite the efforts of McKiernan to keep the ball out it goes in off the Rovers keeper.

  • And it became four as Megan Smyth Lynch finds the bottom corner of the net from a free kick. It's all a little too easy at the moment for the League Champions.

  • 50'

Bonnie McKiernan gathers well from Jemma Quinn after a great move from Megan Smyth Lynch to put the striker in on goal.

  • 48'

Emma Hansberry with an almost traditional long range free kick just dropped marginally too late and settles on the roof of the net.

  • 46'

Second half starts now with no changes on either side. Shels in total control of this fixture at the moment.

  • 44'

Casey Howe gets the treatment now from a late challenge from Jessie Stapleton. The Shels player gets a yellow card for the foul while Howe picks one up for some verbals after the incident.

  • 42'

Ireland U16 manager Megan Smyth Lynch is on the receiving end of a heavy challenge from one of her international charges Keri Loughrey. Shels can't capitalise on the advanced free kick as Keri Loughrey gets a block on the final effort.

  • 40'

Sligo have looked lively in the last few minutes but the game is effectively over. Maguire comes to claim the latest set piece while the rain returns to the Showgrounds as we approach half time.

  • 28'

It's a huge task for the home side as Jemma Quinn has added a third for the visitors. Emma Doherty had been lucky to escape sanction moments earlier after a late collision with Shels netminder Maguire

  • 14'

Shelbourne have doubled their lead after a great move from the Champions. Nadine Clare finds Smyth Lynch wide on the left hand side and her fired cross evades both Quinn and McKiernan in the Sligo goal as Christie Gray slides in under pressure at the back post to send it into the goal and put the Dubliners into control of the game.

  • 12'

Casey Howe is impressing after her two goal salvo last week. She's had a few opportunities from range but hasn't bothered Maguire just yet.

  • 9'

Noelle Murray has opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Amy Roddy is deemed to have fouled Jemma Quinn in the box.

  • 5'

A lovely move for Sligo Rovers as Emma Doherty makes a great run but the ball from Howe is just too strong and runs through to Maguire in goals for Shels.

  • 1'

All the pre match pleasantries have delayed the kick off here by a few minutes by Sligo get us under way.

  • The teams are coming out here in the Showgrounds as we prepare for Sligo Rovers v Shelbourne in the League of Ireland Women's Premier Division.

  • Shels too are forced into a change, Nadine Clare replaces the injured Alex Kavanagh, as they look to keep on the tails of Peamount and Shamrock Rovers

  • Team news has reached us and Sligo are forced to make a change from their last outing, Leah Kelly replaces the injured Alice Lillie at right back

  • A warm welcome from the Shwogrounds, as Sligo Rovers take on the current league champions Shelbourne, Breifne Earley here, host of the FinalWhistle.ie Women's League of Ireland Podcast, I will be updating all the action from Sligo this evening.
