Shels grab late winner against Sligo
Shelbourne left it late to beat Sligo Rovers 1-0 at Tolka Park in the WNL today with Keeva Keenan grabbing a stoppage time winner for the defending champions.
Shels’s perfect record remains in tact thanks with 12 points now won from four games. However, it looked doubtful as Rovers put up a valiant effort defensively for 90 minutes.
Sligo goalkeeper Kristen Sample was one of the standout performers for the visitors and she was kept busy in the opening 45 minutes.
Noelle Murray forced a good save from Sample with a nice volley after half an hour.
Just seconds after that save, Sample had to get down low to deny Jessie Stapleton scoring a wonderful solo goal.
It was a dominant first-half display from the defending champions that was matched by a valiant defensive performance from the league’s newcomers and the two sides were scoreless at the break.
Fifteen minutes after the restart Sample was called into action again, this time turning a Smyth-Lynch free-kick around the post.
Sample would be granted some good fortune when a corner from Murray looped over her head but it was headed off of the line.
The clearance only went as far as the six-yard box where Paula Fox headed downward but Sample managed to hold on to the ball.
As the game entered its final 15 minutes, Noel King’s side threw everything at the visitors.
Substitute Abbie Larkin made an immediate impact, lifting the tempo of the attack and having an effort graze the top of the Sligo crossbar.
Paula McGrory had a chance to win it for Sligo with their only effort of the second-half. She found herself through on goal with Amanda McQuillan off the line but her flick over the goalkeeper didn’t have enough behind it and McQuillan managed to catch it.
It looked like both sides would take a point until the dying embers of injury-time, when Noelle Murray headed the ball down for substitute Keeva Keenan to latch on to and place past Sample.
The result means that Shels remain the only unbeaten team in the league, with the news that Peamount have been handed a 3-0 loss for their game against Sligo due to fielding an unregistered player.
In two weeks The Reds travel to Galway, while Sligo welcome Treaty United to The Showgrounds.
