Jarvis Keeps European Dream Alive For Shels

It’s pole position for Shelbourne in the race for Europe as Will Jarvis’ first half strike after three minutes gave the home side the previous three points that will see them breathing down the necks of Bohemians for that coveted fourth place.

Dundalk huffed and puffed and looked the better side for large part of the game but like most of their season were left to flatter to deceive as they couldn’t muster an equaliser that all but seals the fate that European football will evade Oriel Park next year.

The Reds got off to the perfect start with their first attack of intent, an overload on the right with Dundalk’s defence saw the ball fed to the onrushing Will Jarvis who kept his composure to evade the challenge of Nathan Sheppard and hit the ball to the roof of the net.

The home side continued to press with Jack Moylan breaking off from the attention of Greg Sloggett and looked set to face Sheppard only for Sloggett to recover the ball to deflect for a corner. Dundalk in search for an equaliser saw Archie Davies play a short pass to Paul Doyle who hit a long-range effort from forty yards with it looking as if it could test Kearns but it veered wide.

Jack Moylan had two great chances in quick succession as he collected the ball from Jarvis and evaded the challenge from Brownlie to strike a low effort that just whistled past the post, he followed that up seconds later after beating Sloggett for the ball his shot flew over the bar. Dundalk had the last say in the half after some excellent build-up for the Lilywhites Paul Doyle hit another excellent curling effort that just went wide.

Dundalk started the second half brightly with a good ball in from the right by Davies saw Hoban attack it but he could not direct it on target under pressure from Molloy, he then had a shot on goal but the effort was blocked down. Jack Moylan nearly added Shelbourne’s second as he broke free of the Dundalk defence and evaded Brownlie with it looking certain he would shoot but he lost his footing in the area at the vital moment.

Harry Wood had two chances to add to the home side scoreline but both his efforts went wide of the post as Dundalk made a late surge in the added-on time. The best of the chances fell to Greg Sloggett from a corner but he couldn’t make the vital connection to muster an equaliser.

As the final whistle went the heads bowed from the away side as the realisation the season with four games to go was all but over and for some of these players five years ago to the week they were celebrating a fourth league title in five years. A lifetime ago for this club and side – a major rebuild is now in place for next season.
