Ten Man Shelbourne Earn Hard Fought Point At Home To Dundalk

Ten-man Shelbourne edged Dundalk to earn a crucial point in a game that was full of incidents and simply exciting from beginning to end.

It was a tale of two penalties—Robbie Benson was denied from the spot by the outstanding Conor Kearns, but Jack Moylan overcame his spot kick challenge to give Shelbourne the lead from the spot. Rayhann Tulloch ultimately defeated Kearns and the Shelbourne defence as the game approached its conclusion with a superb curling effort that tied the contest.

In the early exchanges, Rayhann Tulloch was taken down by Andrew Quinn on the byline inside the Shelbourne area and the referee points to the spot for a Dundalk penalty. Following the reward of the penalty Shane Farrell was sent off for an off-the-ball incident with Keith Ward.

Conor Kearns denied the penalty as Robbie Benson shot was well taken but Kearns left his hand high to block it and he then collected the second ball.

Shelbourne nearly took the lead with a fantastic free kick from Caffrey that was sent in the Dundalk area saw Sheppard off his line and scrambling back to tip it onto the crossbar with Paddy Barrett going for the second ball which he converted but the goal was ruled out as he clashed with Sheppard in doing so.

Dundalk continued to press with Archie Davies cutting inside, and he let one fly but his effort was tipped over by Kearns. For the Reds Kian Leavy's cross was played to Matty Smith and the ball bounced off him and it looped over the crossbar.

Dundalk thought they have carved the opening with consistent pressure as a short corner found Tulloch who sent the ball in and there was a goalmouth scramble with Kearns somehow once again keeping the ball out.

The second half tipped in the scales of favour towards the home side as Evan Caffrey was challenged in the area by Tulloch and Shels was awarded a penalty. Jack Moylan converted to give Shelbourne the lead sending Sheppard the wrong way and Tolka into raptures.

It had the feeling of one of those nights for the Lilywhites as Dundalk kept teeing efforts up with John Martin going down in the area and the ball falling to Robbie Benson whose first-time shot cannoned off the post with Rayhann Tulloch striking wide on the rebound.

Tulloch was to make up for that miss with ten minutes to go as he cut in from the left and his absolutely superb curling effort finally beat Kearns to draw Dundalk level. Kearns was to deny him in the dying minutes as he got free at the back post with a snapshot from the winger that forced a great save from Kearns.

Dundalk thought they had it with a low effort from Archie Davies in the dying second and it went literally inches wide of the far post with Kearns beaten.

Dundalk is now five games without a win – next week’s derby against Drogheda is now even bigger.

  • NICE TO SEE YOU: Two ex-Dundalk players in the Shels line-up tonight. Paddy Barrett scored 9 goals in 74 appearances (56 starts) for Dundalk between 2015 and 2017. He memorably played both legs of the club’s famous win v BATE Borisov in 2016. Andrew Quinn is also playing against his old club. He made 1 senior appearance for Dundalk when featuring in the 4-0 defeat to Shamrock Rovers at Oriel Park on September 27th 2020, playing 59 minutes before being replaced by John Mountney.

  • REF: Tonight's referee is Damien MacGraith. Dundalk won their first game at Oriel Park refereed by MacGraith with the 2-1 win over Shelbourne here last month. It was the 13th attempt.

  • KENNY: Eoin Kenny is amongst the Dundalk subs tonight. His dad Stephen Kenny’s first league win as Dundalk manager came against Shelbourne in Tolka Park just over a decade ago on March 15th 2013. Dean Kelly opened the scoring for Shels on the night before John Dillon equalised from the spot. Stephen O’Donnell then put Dundalk ahead with four minutes to go after Graham Gartland had been sent-off before substitute John Mountney made sure of the 3-1 win in the 94th minute.

  • HEAD TO HEAD: Their last win over Dundalk at Tolka was in July 2012. It was 4-0 that night with Philip Gorman scoring two Kevin Dawson also on target and Ben McLaughlin scoring an own goal. That was the last game of Sean McCaffrey's career as Dundalk manager. It also followed the financial problems that lead to the club almost folding.

  • HEAD TO HEAD: Shels’ last league win over Dundalk was in Oriel Park in September 2012 when Paddy Kavanagh scored the only goal in a match in which Mark Griffin was sent-off for the hosts.

  • HEAD TO HEAD: It’s the 305th meeting of these sides tonight in all competitions and the 177th league game. In all competitions against Shels, Dundalk’s record reads W129, D67 and L108. In the league, it is W77, D40 and L59.

  • DUFF VS DUNDALK: Damien Duff has yet to get the better of O’Donnell in a league game with 2 defeats and 3 draws in their 5 meetings. O’Donnell and Stephen Bradley are the two LOI managers he has yet to win against following their win over John Russell’s Sligo Rovers in their last home match

  • O'DONNELL VS SHELS: Stephen O’Donnell is managing against Shelbourne for the 9th time tonight. He has 3 wins, 3 draws and 2 defeats against them.

  • HOBAN: Out of five of the Dundalk bench this evening that has never played a league game for Dundalk. Patrick Hoban is the stand-out option on it

  • TEAM NEWS: Stephen O'Donnell has made three changes from the side which drew with Derry City on Sunday with Alfie Lewis, Johannes Yli-Kokko and Rayhann Tulloch in for the injured Robbie McCourt and Greg Sloggett and suspended Wasiri Williams.
