Match Report

John Martin snatches win at the death on Leeside

A game of two halves at Turners Cross as Cork City looked to be on cruise control for their fifth win of the season before a goal in the last minute before half time direct from a corner from Ryan O’Kane cancelled out Ruairi Keatings early strike.

The Lilywhites spurred on from that goal took the game to City and despite numerous chances just like in Oriel Park a few weeks ago the away side left it late as O’Kane went from scorer to provider as his cross was met by second half replacement John Martin whose header claimed the vital three points to take back to Oriel Park.

Ryan O'Kane's low corner was met by Patrick Hoban but his low effort was well saved by Jimmy Corcoran as it had the potential to sneak under the keeper. A break down the right was met by Babatunde Owolabi, but his effort was blocked by Darragh Leahy. In a brilliant team move, Healy started by feeding the ball to Kevin Čustović whose quick cross was met by Keating and the ball dipped under Sheppard. Healy's cross to Owolabi inside the area forced Nathan Sheppard to make two stunning saves - the first from point-blank range, the second from the goal line.

It was to be the home side who were to press on as Coffey latched onto Keating's pass and it took a deflection for a corner. Sheppard punched the danger clear from the corner, but it fell to Matt Healy who struck from a distance but the shot went wide of the post. That was as good as it got for Cork as Dundalk pulled level out of nothing.

Just before half time Dundalk earned a corner and Ryan O'Kane struck the set piece the corner which curled over everyone and nestled into the far back net. Dundalk’s precocious 19-year-old got his fifth league goal for the club and probably the most vital so far.Having pulled the game level, the away side took the game to the hosts when Ryan O'Kane's early second-half corner was headed down by the City defence. It came to Boyle who saw no clear path, so he fed it to Tulloch, whose shot just missed the target. As Dundalk continued to press, Connor Malley sent a dangerous ball into the city area, where Cameron Elliot's goalbound effort was saved by Corcoran.
Cork had a chance to put themselves ahead again as Custovic lifted the ball over the bar after Sheppard ran into traffic in the six-yard box as his chance to gather the ball was blocked.
Hoban attempted a bicycle kick to get his name on the scoresheet from O'Kane's cross from the right, but he missed and the ball cannons off the Cork defender and back into the path of John Martin who nodded home instinctively from close range for his fourth goal of the season.

KICK OFF: We are underway here at Turners Cross, first touches have been end to end but nothing to note just of yet.

  • TEAM ARRIVALS: The sides are out with both sides wearing thier traditional colours. Cork wearing the familar green and Dundalk in white.

  • HOBAN: Fresh from equalling the club's all-time scoring record against UCD on Monday, Patrick Hoban plays his 275th game for Dundalk tonight. He has 12 career goals against Cork, including 2 for Mervue Utd. He is the all-time leading scorer in Dundalk-Cork games ahead of John Caulfield

  • REF WATCH: Tonight's referee is Rob Hennessy. The Limerick man is refereeing both these sides for the third time this season tonight. He was in charge of both Dundalk’s draws with Derry City – 0-0 in the Brandywell in March and 2-2 in Oriel in April.

  • TURNERS: Cork City have won five of their ten games at Turner’s Cross so far this season, drawing one and losing four for a total of 16 points. They have scored 14 goals at home and conceded 12.

  • CITY RISING: That’s their best run of form in the Premier Division since winning seven in-a-row between May 18th and June 15th 2018. That run came to an end with a 2-1 defeat away to Dundalk in a game that was decided by Sean McLaughlin’s 92nd minute own goal.

  • CITY RISING: Cork are on a run of four wins in-a-row since losing 2-1 to Dundalk in Oriel Park on May 12th. Since they have beaten Sligo Rovers and Shamrock Rovers both 1-0 at home, won 1-0 away to Drogheda Utd and beaten Bohemians 2-1 at the Cross on Monday.

  • HEAD TO HEAD: The two exceptions were in October 2019 when Daire O’Connor’s goal earned Cork a 1-0 win at Turner’s Cross and the 1-0 win at the Cross on Easter Monday – April 10th – when Cian Murphy scored the only goal on 38 minutes.

  • HEAD TO HEAD: It’s the 98th meeting between Dundalk and Cork City this evening. Dundalk have won 44, drawn 22 and lost 31 of the previous 97 meetings. It’s league meeting number 80 between the pair tonight. Dundalk have won 36, drawn 18 and lost 25 of the previous 79 meetings.

  • LAST TIME OUT: Dundalk did win the last meeting between the sides however on May 12 when stoppage time goals from Cameron Elliott and Patrick Hoban cancelled out Tunde Owolabi’s 19th minute opener in a game in which both Josh Honohan and Cian Coleman were sent off for Cork.

  • SKIP VS CORK: Stephen O'Donnell's record v Cork reads as follows – P5 W4 D0 L1 O’Donnell had been undefeated in three previous managerial outings against Cork City prior to the Rebels’ 1-0 win over him at Turner’s Cross on Easter Monday.

  • TEAM NEWS: Dundalk are unchanged from Monday's win against UCD - if it aint broke don't fix it as Patrick Hoban is a goal away from the all time league goalscoring record.

  • Hello from FinalWhistle HQ - Ciaran Callan here to take you through the last game of the series of both Dundalk and Cork City as they wish to enter the mid season break on a high.
