Match Report

Cork pick up vital three points over Dundalk

Cork City claimed a vital three points in Turners Cross over their old rivals Dundalk as a Cian Murphy strike was enough the claim all three points as the Lilywhites have now suffered three losses in a row.

Despite numerous periods of pressure and chances in the second half Dundalk could not make the breakthrough with Rayhann Tulloch with a brace of opportunities to turn the game around. However, Cork City’s response to the 4-0 defeat on Friday could not have been better for Colin Healy and his staff.

A last-second challenge from Jonas Hakkinen prevented Johannes Yli-Kokko from getting a chance on goal after getting in behind the Cork backline in the opening second. This was almost the ideal start for Dundalk. Conor Malley continued Dundalk's pressure by sending a skillful ball into the Cork area. Greg Sloggett had an attempt to score, but the ball was behind him and he missed the target.

After Sheppard cleared a long throw into the Dundalk area, Ruairi Keating played a header follow-up with a shot from the edge of the area, forcing Boyle to block the ball and Sheppard to finally get his hands on the ball. This imposed Cork City's control of the game. Čustović received another throw from Bargary, but his attempt was blocked off the line.

When Keating and Boyle battled it out for possession of the ball, Cian Murphy pounced on the loose ball and slid the ball under the charging Sheppard to give the Rebels the lead. Bolger's ball to Coleman, who then played a fantastic cross into the Dundalk area, almost led to a second goal for Cork, but Greg Sloggett had to clear it off the line.

Ruairi Keating has the first sight of the goal in the second half after picking the ball up on the far right but his curling effort went over the bar. Greg Sloggett latched onto the ball and broke into the area but his effort is well blocked by the Cork defense. Rayhann Tulloch went close twice for Dundalk as he finally got away from Honohan to get a shot away but it flashed to the right and wide. Tulloch once more went close as Malley played a clever pass with his effort striking the side netting.

Coffey with an excellent cross into the Dundalk area that was well saved by Sheppard. Patrick Hoban had a chance late on to equalize as he turned on the edge of the box to get a shot away but didn’t catch the ball cleanly with his effort drifting to the left and wide.
