Match Report

Dundalk stun Cork with smash and grab at Oriel

As the clock struck 90 minutes a dull and subdued Oriel Park looked as if it was staring into the abyss of a loss at the hand of Cork City.

The fourth picked up his board and showed eight minutes in what turned out of the most chaotic ten minutes seen in this ground in a long time. Added on time goals from Cameron Elliot and Patrick Hoban gave Dundalk the victory in Oriel Park. A common term in football is smash and grab - this 2-1 victory was a ram-raiding of the Rebels.

Dundalk started the brighter of the sides as the Lilywhites got a corner that resulted in a Rayhann Tulloch strike that would have troubled Corcoran if it had been on target.

It was Cork who was to take the lead as Babatunde Owolabi stole the ball from Hayden Muller and broke free to round Sheppard and slot it into an empty net. Dundalk had two chances to level the tie with Alfie Lewis’ effort being blocked by Kevin Custovic and Patrick Hoban’s header cannoning off the crossbar, it looked as if it was going to be one of those nights of the home side.

The second half saw Cork hold firm and at every turn, Dundalk was frustrated and beleaguered as to how to get a breakthrough. Archie Davies and Patrick Hoban had sights on goal once more but were left frustrated by the stern and resolute Cork defensive and the inform former Dundalk player Jimmy Corcoran. The shift in dominance started to show in the latter stages as Josh Honohan was sent off after a second yellow card and with the Rebels down to ten, nerves and anger began to show.

The referee showed the board in Oriel Park for eight minutes and without warning the game took to life and in it came the most chaotic ten minutes seen in this old ground. Dundalk piled on serious pressure with the numerical advantage and a cross from the right was met by Cameron Elliot with an overhead effort that flew past Corcoran for his first league goal in a Lilywhite shirt.

The drama was to spill over into red as captain Cian Coleman was given a red card for a lunge that resulted in a melee on the side of the pitch that saw both benches involved and club staff of Dundalk. As if that wasn’t enough for Dundalk the best was yet to come.

A clever playback from Ryan O’Kane whose initial ball was slotted into the path of Patrick Hoban who bore down on the Cork City goal and with the cleverest of toe pokes he guided the ball past Corcoran to snatch the victory in the most brilliant of circumstances.

If anyone doubted the mental resolve of this Dundalk side - they won’t now.

  • PREVIOUS: Dundalk have won 9 of the last 11 matches against Cork in all competitions stretching back to the 2-1 win at Oriel in June 2018 when Krisztian Adorjan scored and Sean McLaughlin's 92nd minute OG earned Stephen Kenny's side the win after Josh O'Hanlon had equalised.

  • PREVIOUS: Cork haven’t won at Oriel Park since the 2018 President’s Cup final in February 2018. On that occasion they overcame the setback of falling 2-0 down to Ronan Murray’s double with Shepperd, McNamee, Sadlier and Cummins on target in the second half as they ran out 4-2 winners

  • LAST TIME IN ORIEL: This is the first meeting between the sides at Oriel Park since February 24th 2020 – Dundalk’s last home match before the outbreak of Covid-19. Vinny Perth’s side ran out 3-0 winners that night courtesy of goals from Michael Duffy, Patrick Hoban (penalty) and Jordan Flores.

  • SKIP: It was Stephen O'Donnell's 50th league game in charge of Dundalk last time out against Sligo Rovers. Tonight he is aiming for his 25th league win for the Lilywhites against a club which he arguably scored his most famous Dundalk goal against in the title deciding game in Oct 2014
