Match Report
Aaron Dobbs wins it late for Wexford FC as they overcame Cobh Ramblers 2-1 in Ferrycarrig Park despite the best efforts of former star Jack Doherty on his return to the South East. A lively opening ten heralded a couple of well struck volleys that flew only narrowly wide. Firstly by Dobbs for Wexford , who was coming off his four goal performance against Kerry, when the ball fell kindly 5 minutes in, but he was unable to keep the effort down from only a few yards out. Minutes later, Jason Abbot’s effort came from nearly 30 yards and had the Wexford players holding their breath for a moment before it flashed the wrong side of the post, much to the home side’s relief. Wexford continued the match in a confident fashion and managed to open the scoring through Danny Furlong 17 minutes in, as the club’s all time top scorer was the first to meet Karl Chambers low cross from the right hand side, turning a composed finish past Cobh keeper Lee Steacy at his near post. Liam Kervick cut in on his left foot on 32 minutes, his whipped effort from the edge of the Wexford penalty area came within inches of levelling the game, but Wexford survived the scare, as they did only three minutes later when Heffernan’s horrible clearance gave Conor Drinan the chance to lob the stranded keeper, but he couldn’t oblige, finding the top of the net with his looped effort and Wexford’s lead remained intact. And it was a lead they nearly doubled right on half time when Reece Webb fired a fierce shot towards goal, requiring terrific reflexes and a strong wrist by Steacy to prevent the right back from increasing the advantage. The second half began quietly for both sides, but that was all to change with the introduction of Doherty, former Wexford FC player and Cobh’s top scorer this season, on 64 minutes. Just two minutes after entering the pitch, Doherty ran through the right hand channel of the box and shot only narrowly wide across the face of goal. He was not to be denied for long however, when a long throw was cleared to only the edge of the box and Doherty appeared to smash the ball into the far corner with a perfectly executed left footed volley to haunt his former side. Despite Wexford’s underwhelming second half performance they were not about to let this game escape from their grasp, pressing high and winning the ball in Cobh’s half, allowing Brandon McCann to slip in Dobbs to shoot low and across the Cobh goal to put Wexford back in the lead with only 4 minutes remaining. Cobh pushed but were unable to find an answer, instead a scuffle broke out in the last minute of injury time resulting in the sendings off of Ethan Boyle and Cian Browne in an ugly end to a fantastic match.Dobbs strikes late to help Wexford to points

All over here after a chaotic end to the game as Wexford run out 2-1 winners thanks to a late Aaron Dobbs goal. Two red cards marred the end of an entertaining game which will celebrated heavily in the Wexford dressing room with those three points going a long way in their position in the table, closing the gap to Cobh to only two points
Ethan Boyle and Cian Browne receive their marching orders for their part in the fight
Ugly scenes after a melee broke out as the teams lined up for a free kick. Two Red cards
Dunne gets a yellow for yet another cynical foul
O’ Brien heads over from 6 yards in what could be Cobh’s last chance of the game
Shot by Desmond is gathered by Heffernan as Wexford look to hold onto all three points
Wexford’s goal shows again how clinical they have been this half with Dobbs’ effort being one of only a very few strikes on goal this entire half
Yellow for Webb as he kicks the ball away
Wexford press hard and win the ball high and make no mistake from the resulting 3 on 3 as McCann slides in Dobbs who fires low to put Wexford ahead late here
It has to be said Wexford have been poor this half, barely breaking into the Cobh half except for set pieces
Booking for Levingston as he pulls down Doherty
Oh it just had to be him!! The ball falls out to the edge of the area after a long throw and there is Doherty to power a gorgeous half volley arrowing into the corner. 1-1
Wexford have been pegged back for most of this half, Cobh need to take advantage of the pressure as the game enters its final 15 minutes
Chambers is Wexford’s third man in the book as he blocks the keeper from kicking to start a counter
And he almost is the difference maker immediately! Doherty runs through in the right hand side of the box with his first touches of the game and strikes low and just past the post, nearly the perfect return to playing!
Yellow for Corbally with another cynical foul by Wexford
Yellow for Crawford as he wipes out Kervick on a promising run
Cobh haven’t begun this half with much more intent then they finished the first, though Wexford asleep seem to have come out of the blocks at a lower gear than they were at in the opening 45
Free kick from 25 yards for Cobh right in the centre of the pitch but the O’ Brien can’t keep his effort under the crossbar
And we are back on here, still under some fine weather though this time the sun will hinder the Cobh defence
Halftime comes with Wexford in the attack and in the lead, Furlongs goal has them in the driving seat after an impressive first half display against a Cobh side who seem slightly off the pace. The Cork side will need a stronger performance in the second half if they’ll hope to get anything out of this game
Scramble in the Cobh box and Wexford are able to maintain the pressure which ultimately leads to a powerful drive by Reece Webb that needs a wonderful stop by Steacy in goal to prevent Wexford doubling their lead right on halftime
Neither team have been able to open their opponents up to create a clear opportunity for themselves since the goal, and we approach halftime with Wexford still a goal to the good
Terrible clearance by Heffernan gives Conor Drinan the chance to lob the stranded keeper, but the delicate touch was no where to be found for the Cobh man who struck over
Super effort from Tiernan O’Brien who buy inside and let go a wicked effort with his left which he couldn’t quite wrap into the far corner
Wexford have moved the ball excellently back to front, and the clinical finishing touch that has so often eluded them this season seems to have been found momentarily in this first 30 minutes aswell as their game to Kerry, which they have followed up performance wise with aplomb so far
It was poor defending by Cobh as Wexford cut through their defence far too easily to put themselves ahead, though you can see the confidence this Wexford team has had in everything they’ve been doing this opening 20 minutes and a goal never looked to far away
Goal for Wexford as Danny Furlong gets ahead of the Cobh defence to poke home a low cross from the right side by Karl Chambers at the near post
Great strike by Jason Abbott on the volley from all of 30 yards and it only zips narrowly wide
Take effort from just outside the area by Luke Desmond is comfortably stopped and held by Charlie Heffernan in the Wexford net
Former Wexford FC man and Cobh Ramblers top scorer this season, Jack Doherty, is on the bench this evening having not made an appearance since late April, will tonight be the perfect return to the team and to Ferrycarrig Park tonight?
Strike on the volley from Dobbs flies over after the ball broke kindly from the games first corner
A low sun glare faces the Wexford defence this first half, it could cause some trouble under the high ball for them should Cobh look to exploit
And we are off!
Cobh beat Wexford 2-1 in the reverse fixture earlier in the season thanks to a late goal from Dale Holland in Cork but Cobh haven’t won in three and Wexford are coming off a historic 6-0 away win in Kerry last week, interesting tie to come!
We are only a few minutes away from kickoff here in Ferrycarring where Wexford FC are hosting Cobh Ramblers on a glorious sunny evening down here in Wexford
