Match Report

Wexford make Cobh trip count

A dogged and defiant Wexford FC were full value for their come from behind win against Cobh Ramblers in this SSE Airtricity League First Division clash at St. Colman's Park.

Following a Dinny Corcoran warning shot for the visitors and against the run of play, Beineoin O'Brien Whitmarsh forced an error which forced a deflection to put Cobh back in front. 2-1 Cobh Ramblers on 74 minutes.

The game turned with a Cobh Ramblers substitution and Darren Murphy deciding to switch to a 4-5-1 formation to defend his side's lead with 15 minutes remaining.

The play continued to open up the more Cobh tried to shut it down.

With eight minutes remaining, Dinny Corcoran showed great control and strength to take the ball down and score a superb goal to put Ian Ryan's side back on level terms.

The visitors' luck was in, when in the final minute of normal time, Cobh's Brendan Frahill saw red for denying a goalscoring opportunity by handling the ball.

Dinny Corcoran stepped up to fire the resulting penalty down the middle past Cobh keeper, Sean Barron.

Let's rewind to the start of the game, in front a solid crowd of close to 800, Wexford did have the better of the early possession.

Ramblers showed their teeth on 10 minutes when Danny O'Connell had a great chance and soon after, Dale Holland fired high with the goal at his mercy, going for power over placement.

Paul Hunt, the returning former Rambler, had to be sharp to save with his feet to allow the game's first corner kick. Hunt was solid to deny Ben O'Riordan again later in the half. Beineoin Whitmarsh, Jack Larkin and Danny O'Connell were involved in all things positive for Cobh in the first half.

Whitmarsh's tenacity and hunger allowed him to steal back possession from a Wexford free-kick, which set up a three on one situation, which enabled Larkin to loop the ball over Hunt for the opening goal.

Lorcan Fitzgerald's superb tackle to deny a certain goal was the exception to a mostly scrappy early second half affair.

There was a short delay after an assistant referee appeared to have been struck by an object, on the hour mark.

Cobh appeared to be tense but comfortable at disrupting, Wexford's growing momentum and confidence in retaining possession.

It's a disappointing start to Cobh's centenary celebrations but Wexford duly rewarded for their bravery, positivity and ambition in continuing to chase the three points.
