Match Report

Rams grab first win overtaking Wexford

Cobh Ramblers confirmed their first victory in the 2021 SSE Airtricity League First Division tonight by beating Wexford at Ferrycarrig Park, thanks to goals from Ciaran Griffin and Killian Cooper.

The Slaneysiders are now rooted at the bottom of the table and still looking for a win, as they showed a completely different face in the second half rewarded with a late Kyle Robinson goal.

However, Robinson's effort wasn't enough to overcome the strong start made by the visitors in the first 45 minutes.

A lovely evening in the Southeast was crowned with an emotive game as both teams showed two different faces during the 90 minutes.

The visitors took the lead at early doors when Ciaran Griffin enjoyed an easy finish with just eight minutes on the clock, after stealing the ball off Jimmy Corcoran as the goalkeeper couldn’t boot away a sneaky pass coming from the defence.

A great delivery from Ian Turner found Darryl Walsh, as he missed the goal by inches was a clear signal of the Rams intentions to seal the game as soon as possible. The first warning from the homeside came in the 24th minute as Jack Doherty missed a glamorous chance to equalise matters but blazed a shot wide with just the keeper to beat.

Brian O’Sullivan’s troops were incapable to find avenues to come forward on the pitch for the majority of the first half, and saw their scenario getting darker. A minute from the break, Killian Cooper confirmed the second goal for the Cork-based side drizzling James Carroll and putting the ball past the goalkeeper with a lovely left-foot finish.

Wexford needed a plan B and it came at the back of Success Edogun coming off the bench for the second 45 minutes. The powerful forward became the great driver for the Slaneysiders to give a much better performance running against the clock.

The first warning came from Paul Fox, with a shot from a tight angle forcing Sean Barron to punch it away. With the reset button pressed by Success Edogun, playing as an instrumental piece in Wexford’s scheme, his teammates were enjoying much more space and consequently found different gears to come forward, however struggling to carve out proper chances to score.

Cobh Ramblers wall suffered the first serious shake with five minutes to go, as they managed to block two shots from Edogun, but ended up pierced by Kyle Robinson heading a perfect cross coming from a right corner.

The changes at the break made Wexford a new team, but Robinson’s goal came too late for the hosts.
