Match Report
Brierley the hero as DLR Waves strike late to beat Galway
It finished 3-2 in Eamonn Deacy Park with DLR taking all three points, a great opening quarter saw three goals in a frantic start in the West.
Galway’s Elle O'Flaherty opened the scoring just after 5 minutes with great play from Julie Ann Russell.
DLR Responded well with two goals in 4 minutes Shauna Carroll finding space in the box and hitting the ball high into the roof of the net. While Kate Molone slotted home from close range after a great effort from Carla McManus.
Galway equalised after 52 minutes Jamie Erickson heading home from a set piece.
It was sub Avril Brierly whos brilliant chip effort after 85 minutes sealed all three points.
It was a lively start to proceedings in the West Julie Ann Russell set the tone early for the home side causing a turnover inside the DLR half of the pitch and slotted in Elle O'Flaherty for a simple tap-in with just 5 minutes on the clock.
DLR Waves were quick to respond, a throw-in on their left-hand side found Shauna Carroll in the box and a brilliant turn in the box set her free to rifle the ball into the roof of Abbiegayle Ronayne's net 8 minutes gone and the sides back level.
Galway let their heads drop and DLR capitalised on good play down Waves right-hand side saw Carla McManus have a fantastic effort well saved but it was Katie Malone who reacted fastest and slotted home from close range 11 minutes gone and the away side had completed their turn around.
Galway left in shock after their great start they were now trailing.
GWFC playing with the wind in the first half saw some of their long ball attempts go out over the endline as the wind was causing havoc with the midfield players passing radars.
DLR were using the wind to their advantage, the wind holding up their long passes allowing their forwards to get over the top.
Galway dealt with these attempts well and the sides went in 2-1 at the break.
Galway started the second half well and found an equaliser from a set piece Jamie Erickson heading home from a Kate Thompson cross.
The two sides endured a great battle in the second half both sides gunning for the win but unfortunately for Galway it was DLR who struck the vital goal Sub Avril Brierley had a brilliant piece of individual skill rewarded with a fine chip finding the back of the net sealing all three points for the away side on the 85th minute mark ending the scoring with a final score of 3-2.
