Match Report

WFC and Waves share the spoils in Galway

DLR Waves Sarah McKevitt's first-half strike was not enough for all three points as Aoife Thompson equalised five minutes into the first half injury time for Galway WFC to ensure a share of the spoils at Eamon Deacy Park.

Thompson's equaliser came after an injury to Savannah McCarthy saw a long first half stoppage.

Neither side could find a winner in the second half which saw both sides with opportunities to snatch all three points.

The early exchanges of this match were cagey as both sides struggled to get a foothold in the match. DLR Waves had most of the early possession but failed to make any major chances.

10 minutes in Kerri Letmon’s cross from the left hand side evaded everyone and nearly creeped in at the back post only for Galway keeper Abbiegayle Ronayne tipped it out for a corner.

Rachel Doyle had a long range shot go just wide after 31 minutes. It was 5 minutes later in the 36th minute Sarah McKevitt found herself free in the Galway box after a good pass found her free and she slotted home for the away side to go 1-0 up.

Unfortunately for Galway in the aftermath of the goal captain Savannah McCarthy collided with her own keeper and sustained a bad injury to which she was forced off with aid from the medical staff. We wish her all the best in her recovery and hope she's not out for too long.

In added time due to the injury Galway found an equaliser, great play from Julie Ann Russel set Lynsey McKey free and her great cross was met at the back post by Aoife Thompson who headed home from close range and the sides went in level 1-1 at the break.

The second half started much like the first with both sides struggling to stamp their authority on the match.

The home side had a soft penalty appeal dismissed after 58 minutes Eva Badana pulling down Aoife Thompson. Two minutes later on the hour mark Taylor Rutlands long ball over the top found Thompson who seemed to be through on goal she took her attempt early and it failed to trouble the Waves keeper.

Both sides were fighting for all three points but lack of finishing in the final third and some good defending saw both sides share the points.

DLR survived two late scares, clearing a shot off the line in the 85th minute and Aoife Brophy's brilliant block in the 92nd minute dening Galway a late victory.
