Match Report
Singleton grabs Galway winner
A late goal from Chloe Singleton helped Galway take all three points from DLR Waves at the UCD Bowl this afternoon.
Singleton’s goal was the high point in what was a drab affair in Belfield.
The game’s opening 45 minutes produced very little talking points. The first chance of the game didn’t arrive until after the half hour mark when Nadine Clare headed wide for the hosts.
Sarah McKevitt would have the only shot on target in the half when her low driven effort was straight at Abbiegayle Ronayne.
A lack of quality in the final third was ever present as the game became quite scrappy with both sides playing very rushed and direct football.
Defences were on top but it was made easy for both sides given the lack of a quality final pass Thanks to this the teams headed into the break scoreless.
Galway started the second-half a much stronger side, with Jenna Slattery firing off two early efforts.
The first being a curling free-kick that failed to find the target and the second a driven shot straight at Eve Badana.
Chloe Singleton looked as though she had scored the goal of the season, beating three Waves defenders on a great solo run before flashing the ball across the face of goal and watching it bounce on the wrong side of the post.
The visitors were beginning to get on top and their improved play was rewarded with just nine minutes to go as Singleton latched on to a throw-in and found herself at a tight angle in front of goal.
Despite this she managed to squeeze the ball under Badana and give Galway the lead and eventually all three points.
This afternoon’s result means that Galway are now four points ahead of DLR.
They travel to league leaders Shelbourne next week, meanwhile Waves will be at Markets Field taking on Treaty United.
