Match Report
Late surge seals three points for Wexford
Goals from Ciara Rossiter and Kylie Murphy sealed an impressive win for Wexford Youths over DLR Waves this evening, keeping the title race alive with Shelbourne in the process.
Wexford controlled the opening half and led after 23 minutes, but Waves came back with a beauty by Sarah McKevitt to tie things up, two goals in seven minutes late in the second half made the difference, before Rossiter finished things five minutes from time.
The win now leaves two points between Wexford and Shelbourne at the top, as the Dubliners have commitments elsewhere to worry about before looking back at the league table.
Waves had the first major chance of the half Avril Brierley had the effort which went high and wide of the goal, it was a fairly tight start to the game as neither side could get the creative touch in front of goal.
Wexford struck first however through Ellen Molloy, Becky Watkins running into the area creating space to tee up Molloy to make a magical mazy run to hypnotise the Waves backline before finishing into the net.
The visitors came close to finding the net minutes later, Kate Mooney controlled the ball with her chest just outside the 18 yard box, her shot was on target but Maeve Williams could gather.
Kylie Murphy had the ball in the net after the half hour mark, Watkins again turning provider but the flag was up for offside as Waves went in 1-0 down at the break, Eve Badana saving well from a Molloy free kick just before the interval to keep them in the tie.
Waves started brightly in the second half as Malone had a strike from outside the box which was saved by Williams, later a brilliant corner kick delivery from Sarah McKevitt, Mooney’s shot first time on the turn in the box was deflected over the crossbar for another corner kick.
They did strike in the 53rd minute as Mckevitt nestled a beauty into the top corner, Sophie Watters instrumental in the build up as the outside of the box finish was a thing of beauty.
Wexford would fight back and take the lead after 70 minutes, Rossiter with a brilliant solo effort to send a low shot past Badana, to give the hosts confidence with 20 minutes left on the clock.
Murphy made it 3-1 minutes later with a tidy finish from close range, a cross from the right was guided home by Murphy as Badana could not keep out the effort. Waves pushed on but failed to cut the deficit, five minutes from time Rossiter wrapped up the tie with a tap in at the far post.

Wexford look to remain in the title picture with three points this evening in Ferrycarrig Park, with DLR Waves struggling of late this looks like a good time for them to close the gap to Shelbourne, but on their day DLR are a tough team with plenty quality to test everyone in the league, my name is Diarmuid Kearney and I will update on all the action this evening from the South East
