Match Report

Taylor ties-up Wexford win

Substitute Sinead Taylor’s strike ten minutes from time sealed all three points for Wexford Youths against DLR Waves in this refixed game at the UCD Bowl.

Waves matched the Youths well for large periods of this contest, but it was the visitors who finished the happier in this Womens National League clash.

Youths had the better of the chances during a relatively quiet first period. Wexford almost got off to the perfect start when Ellen Molloy’s defence splitting pass found Ciara Rossiter inside the area but her effort was saved well by Eve Badana in the DLR Waves net.

The away side came close again just after the half hour mark when Kylie Murphy linked up well with Bates-Crosbie and Molloy before unleashing a shot from the edge of the area. Jess Gleeson blocked the shot well and the ball flew narrowly over the bar.

On the cusp of half time, DLR Waves struggled to clear their lines and Ciara Rossiter found herself through on goal. Rossiter opted to try and dink the ball over Badana but her effort trickled inches wide of the net.

Graham Kelly’s half time team talk worked well as his DLR side came out all guns blazing at the start of the second period. The home side almost took the lead when Kerri Letmon’s cross from the right wing was met by the head of Berrill but she couldn’t keep her effort down and her header flew over the bar.

Moments later, DLR Waves came close again through Niamh Donnelly’s cross which was met by the lively Jetta Berrill . Berrill’s effort looked destined for the top right corner but Keev Gray’s strong hand tipped the ball onto the woodwork .

The Dublin side continued their pressure and Shauna Carroll came close after she got on the end of Kerri Letmon’s dangerous delivery into the box but her shot looped just wide of the goal.

Both sides pressed for an opener throughout the game but it wasn’t until the 82nd minute that the deadlock was breached. Substitute Sinead Taylor got in behind the DLR Waves defence and rifled a left footed shot into the top corner.

Taylor’s strike means Wexford Youths will be travelling down the N11 with all three points and within touching distance of table toppers Peamount United.
