WNL: Defences on top in DLR Waves and Wexford Youths stalemate

DLR Waves and Wexford each took a point away from a sunny UCD Bowl after the sides tied 0-0 this evening in the WNL.

Though scoreless, the first-half was an entertaining with both sides having chances to take the lead as play ebbed and flowed.

Wexford took control in a second-half that featured very little scoring opportunities for either team as both defences stayed solid to see out a draw.

The midfield battle between the sides was key in the first-half and Wexford's early dominance in the central parts of the pitch allowed them to put the Waves under pressure.

The Slaney-sider's could win Eve Badana's kick-outs and DLR clearances to hem the home side into their area but the pressure delivered no real chances for the visitors.

It was DLR that had the first big chance of the game when Sarah McKevitt sent in a cross for the head of Katie Malone only for the pass to be cut out by Wexford's Meabh Russell.

Both teams had chances just before the water break on 21 minutes, with Eve Badana forced to leave her goal and intercept an excellent through ball for the onrushing Kylie Murphy at one end and Maeve Williams saving Sarah McKevitt's powerful strike at the other.

Wexford looked to be gaining momentum around the half-hour mark when Badana had to smother Edel Kennedy's efforts on 32 minutes but the Waves would soon come back into things.

Carla MacManus shot right and wide for DLR on 34 minutes and she set up Kate Mooney in front of goal soon only for the forward's volleyed effort to travel just over the crossbar. A long-range effort from Mooney would miss the target moments later.

Wexford countered to force Badana to come out again and clear her lines while a Becky Watkins shot from right to left came very close to sending the visitors ahead but rolled narrowly wide.

In the meantime, DLR's McManus played in Katie Malone but Meabh Russell again stood her ground while two efforts inside the visitor's box on 45 minutes came very close.

Ellen Molloy sent a shot straight at Badana in the final play of the half to see the sides enter the break level.

Wexford took control in the second-half and prevented the home side from seeing much of the ball.

Despite their dominance, they created little.

Ellen Molloy received a ball over the top to get away a strike soon after half-time but her effort was blocked by Louise Corrigan. The visitor's didn't really threaten until Kylie Murphy's 64th minute effort was saved by Eve Badana to maintain the status quo.

The Waves did try to get forward but the Wexford defence remained steady to deny them any clear cut chances. Jess Gleeson had a free-kick sail over the crossbar while Ireland U17 Joy Ralph didn't see a chance fall her way after she was subbed on.

Nevertheless, DLR did hold out at the back despite some late scares. Ellen Molloy had a shot blocked by Gleeson in the 86th minute and luckily for the home side, Jessica Lawler's blazed her follow-up over.

Ciara Rossiter looked to have beaten Badana in the 93rd minute with an immaculate chip but it rolled just right of the post and ultimately the player was called offside and the game ended in a stalemate.
