Match Report
Wexford Youths went a step closer to retaining their FAI Womens Cup tonight beating nine-woman DLR Waves 3-1 at Ferrycarrig Park. The first half was all about Waves who went ahead through a Katie Malone header after 16 minutes. Despite struggling in attack, Wexford equalised before half-time through Nicola Sinott. Straight red cards for Mia Dodd and keeper Eve Badana proved pivotal as late goals from Ellen Molloy and Ciara Rossiter sent the Youths into the last four. It wasn’t pretty for the most part, but its Stephen Quinn’s Youths who advanced through this quarter-final after what can only be described as a valiant effort from DLR Waves. It was Graham Kelly’s team who started off brightest, as runs down the channel from Malone and Sarah McKevitt caused all sorts of problems. This would come to fruition when McKevitt whipped in a vicious cross and Malone met it with her head to score her eighth goal of the season and give the visitors a deserving lead. Wexford struggled to show their quality in the first-half, mainly threatening through set-pieces while Rossiter on the left was their sole bright spark. None the less they found an equaliser on 40 minutes when a scramble in the box following a corner resulted in a tap in for Nicola Sinott to make it 1-1 at the interval. The second-half started at a slow pace and the game continued on this way until a thorough challenge from Mia Dodd changed the course of the fixture. Her challenge saw her receive a straight red after 53 minutes; however this didn’t really seem to effect DLR’s attacking involvement. After 69 minutes goalkeeper Badana rushed out from her goal and fouled the oncoming Molloy, meaning Waves went down to nine. At this stage the hosts ticked up their pressure with Waves numerically vulnerable but still, the travelling outfit remained defensively sound. They might have even survived the initial 90 minutes if it wasn’t for a brilliant bit of innovation from Molloy in the 85th minute. As the ball was recycled back into the box, she brilliantly flicked a volley over the head of substitute goalkeeper Rugile Auskalnyte to put Wexford in front. Rossiter then broke through in stoppage time, picking up on a rebound from an Auskalnyte save and making it 3-1. Not the best performance from the cup holders but they scored when it mattered and now reach the semi-finals. Waves will be very disappointed looking back as ill-discipline proved to be the only flaw in their game today.WFAI Cup Report: Wexford Youths v DLR Waves
