Match Report

WNL: Wexford handed tough test by Waves

Goals from Nicola Sinnott and Ciara Rossiter helped Wexford Youths to a hard fought 2-0 win over DLR Waves at Ferrycarrig Park this evening.

The visitors will feel as though they could have gotten something out of this game having had the majority of the ball, but they failed to create much with it.

Waves produced the first chance of the game when Katie Malone found herself in a one-on-one with Maeve Williams, but it was the Wexford goalkeeper that came out on top.

The opener came just 15 minutes in when Ciara Rossiter’s free-kick found its way to the feet of Nicola Sinnot who turned the ball past Eve Badana.

Waves dominated possession, playing a very direct style of football and found themselves spending a lot of time in Wexford’s half of the pitch.

Despite this they did not manage to create many clear-cut chances.

Sarah McKevitt, who was their best player today, fired a close range effort over the bar 10 minutes before the break.

McKevitt’s pace saw her get to the byline and deliver crosses on several occasions but they came to no avail.

Eve Badana would be called into action just before half-time when Emma Walker found herself free in the box but her effort was a routine save for the Waves shot-stopper.

The hosts looked to double their lead early in the second-half when Rossiter found herself free in the box, but she fired over the bar.

Again, DLR’s directness would get them high up the pitch but they failed to find the target.

McKevitt had a shot hit the side-netting, meanwhile Jess Gleeson couldn’t score against her former team when she blazed an effort over the bar from close range with 10 minutes to go.

Katie Malone looked to score a spectacular long range effort which just whistled over the bar five minutes from time.

Youths finally managed to catch their breath when Ellen Molloy was fouled 25 yards from goal after a quick counter-attack.

Rossiter opted to shoot from the resulting free-kick and beat Badana, doubling the host's lead with just two minutes of normal time left.

This evening’s result means that Wexford are now level on points with second placed Peamount, meanwhile DLR Waves slip down to fifth.

Both teams are back in action next week with Waves hosting Sligo Rovers and Wexford making the trip down to Turners Cross to face Cork City.
