WNL: Corbet magic sees Athlone past Cork
An Emily Corbet wonder goal in the 61st minute was the difference as Athlone Town edged Cork City 1-0 at Athlone Town Stadium.
The opening ten minutes was played at a frantic pace with both teams struggling to keep possession as Cork played in Athlone’s away strip due to “unforeseen and exceptional circumstances.”
Once the game eventually settled it was Athlone who had the better of the play. Julia Keenan was particularly influential for hosts while Cork were reliant on Lauren Singleton’s pace on the break.
Laurie Ryan and Kellie Brennan had the best chances of half for Athlone with Maria O’Sullivan doing well to deny on both occasions.
Orlaith Deasy had City’s best chance before the break when her low drilled effort flew just side of the post as Danny Murphy’s side began to grow into the game.
The second half began in the same vein as the first with Athlone dominating the ball. Keenan once again went close but City keeper Maria O’Sullivan did well to deny her.
The home side would finally get the breakthrough however on the hour mark and it was well worth the wait. Jess Hennessy put in an excellent cross which Emily Corbet matched, hitting a terrific volley over the head of O’Sullivan to make it 1-0.
City responded well and nearly equalised in the 65th minute. Niamh Coombes spilled a Singleton free-kick with ball inches away from going over the line.
Corbet nearly had her second on 76 minutes when her right footed effort went just wide of the goal as City began to open up in search of an equaliser.
Athlone managed to see it out with the win meaning they move to third in the table while there are early signs of promise under Danny Murphy from a Cork City perspective.
