Match Report

Free Scoring Cork Too Good for Athlone

High flying Cork made light work of Athlone in a 4-1 victory at Turners Cross.

The hosts were on the attack from the off and nearly had the lead after fifteen seconds when Barry Coffey ran straight through the Bray defence but struck his shot straight at Athlone goalkeeper Micheál Schlingerman.

Ruairí Keating opened the scoring on seven minutes when he snuck past the Athlone defence before rounding Schlingerman and slotting the ball into the empty net for his third goal of the season.

Keating would bag his second goal of the night on eighteen minutes from the penalty spot after an Athlone defender was deemed to have handled the ball from a corner.

City’s third would come in the 35th minute when Cian Murphy headed in off Kevin O’Connor’s corner. Ally Gilchrist can count himself unlucky not to have scored himself as his header fell to the Tipperary man to finish.

There was another goal two minutes later, this time for the visitors after Carlton Ubaezuonu took advantage of some slack City defending to sneak into the back post and fire the ball past David Harrington, ending a four-game run of clean sheets.

The second half began much the same as the first. Cork got their fourth goal of the night in the 52nd minute when Barry Coffey managed to find the net after a goalmouth scramble from Kevin O’Connor’s long throw.

Athlone’s misery was compounded in the 82nd minute when substitute Aaron Connelly was sent off for a second yellow after a rash tackle on Cian Murphy, much to the delight of the Shed end.

In the end, a comfortable 4-1 victory for the hosts which puts them three points clear at the top of the table after seven games.
