WNL: Four-in-a-row for Athlone
Athlone Town made it four wins on the bounce in the WNL with a 4-1 win in Turners Cross today.
A Muireann Devaney brace complemented by goals from Emily Corbet and Gillian Keenan meant Athlone did more than enough. Cork got one through Aoife Cronin, but it mattered little.
Athlone didn’t have quite the red hot start they did last week, but still had chances. Corbet had a pair of chances in the first five, but hardly anything major.
Hannah Walsh had to pull off a double save in the 22nd minute when Melissa O’Kane ran through on goal. She denied the initial effort, before managing to catch the second lofted effort, also from O’Kane. A warning shot for Cork.
Cristina Dring could’ve had Cork in front four minutes later when Natalie O’Brien’s cross was missed by the entire Athlone backline and it fell unexpectedly to Dring, who just couldn’t get her feet right. Somewhat of a let off for Athlone.
Athlone got the breakthrough in the 39th minute. Kayleigh Shine played a straightforward long ball for Devaney to run on to, who duly slotted away. This sort of goal is becoming typical of Athlone this season.
In the 49th minute, O’Kane tested Walsh from range at her near post. Walsh denied what would’ve been a great goal however, keeping her side in it.
This was sealed in the 52nd minute when Roisin Molloy was taken down in the box. Corbet stepped up to score her third penalty in two weeks, putting Athlone in a comfortable position.
Devaney had her second three minutes later when the ball simply sat up for her on the edge of the area and she struck it in. Athlone were starting to put on a show.
About ten minutes later however Cork took something from this game. Eva Mangan delivered an in-swinging corner right into the mixer, which Aoife Cronin met to give her side one.
Athlone re-established the three goal cushion soon after however after Lauren Singleton was dispossessed on the edge of her own area by Gillian Keenan, who sauntered through on goal and slotted in to give the cake its icing.
This win means Athlone are in very good form and should be in very high spirits facing the tough away trip to Peamount next week. Cork will likely have another tough task on their hands, as they host Wexford Youths.

Full time.
Mangan has a pop from range but it does little to trouble McKiernan in the Athlone goals.
Ten minutes to go. Safe to say this is settled.
Corbet dinks a free and smacks the bar. Unlucky not to have a personal second and Athlone's fifth.
Goal! Athlone respond instantly after Keenan nicks Singelton's back pockets and goes through and slots it in.
Goal! Cork get one back after Mangan's corner is met by Cronin!
Goal! It sits up for Devaney on the edge of the area and she bags her second! Great finish.
Goal! Corbet slots it in.
Penalty Athlone. Keenan can't control Ryan's through ball before Molloy gets there and is fouled.
O'Kane forces a big near post save off Walsh.
Athlone start the second half.
Half time.
Goal! Kayleigh Shine sweeps a long ball forward and Devaney runs through before slotting it in!
Munroe looks like she's swinging in a free but attempts to catch out Walsh at the near post. Wins a corner.
Cork get forward and Nathalie O'Brien's cross finds Cristina Dring, who doesn't get the contact right. Big chance squandered.
Walsh pulls off a double save. First Kane bursts through and hits her shot straight at her. On the rebound however, Walsh does well to grab Kane's second effort and hold it. Best chance of the game so far.
Some pinball emerges after Cork don't deal with a free well, but nothing comes of it. Athlone probably on top in the first 15.
Corbet gets on the end of a clearance and looks to lob Walsh, but hits it wide.
A Molloy strike falls to Corbet and she gets a shot off, but it's straight at Walsh.
Cork get us underway.
Athlone have a real chance of making it four wins on the bounce for them. Cork will be looking to tighten up at the back following last weeks hammering by DLR Waves.
