Match Report

Early Healy goal the difference for Cork

Matt Healy’s long range strike on 18 minutes proved to be difference as Cork City edged Galway United 1-0 at Eamonn Deacy Park.

It was a cagey opening with both sides knowing what was at stake in a potentially season defining game.

Few chances were created in the opening quarter but the game burst into life in the 18th minute through Matt Healy. The City winger did exceptionally well to pick up the ball from 30 yards out before hitting a wonderful effort into to the top corner leaving Conor Kearns for dead in the Galway goal.

The visitors nearly doubled their lead five minutes later when Cian Murphy hit the post after making a great run into the box but his shot hit the wrong side of the right hand upright.

Wilson Waweru was the one bright spark for the home side in the first half. The Galway attacker though he had levelled the game in the 27th minute but his shot was somehow cleared off the line by David Harrington, showing why he has been called up to the Irish Under-21 squad.

Galway started in more attacking fashion in the second half with Manu Dimas coming on for Gary Boylan during the break. Waweru had the first chance of the second half but his curling effort went high and wide.

The game turned on its head on 68 minutes when former Galway player Ruairí Keating was sent off for Cork after he was involved in an alteration with Diego Portilla.

City’s discipline continued to falter with two more yellow cards in quick succession going to Cian Bargary and Matt Healy.

From here Galway completed dominated as they pushed for an equaliser. Despite their dominance, they were unable to truly test Harrington who had an injury scare when he went down with a muscle issue.

Despite the adversity, Colin Healy’s side held out however for a crucial three points to return to the top of the table heading into the mid-season break.
