Strong Second Half Finish Lands Tribesmen Three Points
A second half brace from David Hurley along with goals from Wassim Aouachria and Vincent Borden saw First Division leaders record their 23rd league win of the season.
Wassim opened the scoring in the 34th minute before Jack Dohety drew Ramblers level in the 38th minute. Galway manager John Caulfield made a few changes and they made a difference.
Substitute Borden put Galway ahead in the 68th minute and then in the space of nine minutes Hurley scored his 19th and 20th goals of the season.
The first chance of the game fell to the home side in the 11th minute. Ronan Manning showed great skill to get past a number of Ramblers defenders, he played the ball to Stephen Walsh but his effort was cleared off the line by former Galway player Charlie Lyons.
Minutes later Rams keeper Lee Steacy made an excellent save to deny Francely Lomboto. In the 18th minute Galway keeper Brendan Clarke pulled off a fine save from Matthew McKevitt.
The home side forced Rams into the concession of a number of corners. In the 26th minute David Hurley’s corner was headed over by Wassim. Down the other end Doherty shot over in the 31st minute.
Galway took the lead in the 34th minute; Wassim picking the ball up and firing to the net from a tight angle. Minutes later Steacy denied Wassim a second goal.
Rams were back on level terms in the 38th minute when Cian Browne’s pinpoint cross from the left was headed home by Doherty.
Both sides had half chances before Galway went back in front in the 68th minute when substitute Borden picked up Ed McCarthy’s pass and fired an excellent strike to the net; he had scored in the two previous games against Ramblers.
Three minutes later and the Tribesmen got their third goal. Conor McCormack played a short free to Hurley and he hit a stunning low shot past Steacy.
The scoring didn’t end there. In the 80th minute substitute Rob Manley headed the ball into the path of Hurley and he made no mistake with a fine effort. Manley was denied by his former Longford Town team-mate Steacy near the end.
