Match Report

Tribesmen take points from Cobh

The introduction of Padraic Cunningham inspired Galway United to a comfortable win against Cobh Ramblers in St. Colman's Park this evening.

In a game packed with incident, three of the away goals came from penalties with Ruairi Keating (2) and substitute Cunningham (1) on target.

Cobh finished the game with 10 men, with Charlie Lyons dismissed after just 19 minutes, after he handled the ball on the line, to deny Galway United a certain goal.

The score-line somewhat flatters Galway United, who were under pressure in the second half, but Cunningham was introduced with 20 minutes remaining and his influence was immediate.

He earned a penalty with his first run into the home side's box.

That spot-kick was delightfully slotted home by Ruairi Keating.

It was Keating's second of the night.

He also capitalised on Lyons sending off for a handball, which denied Galway a goalscoring opportunity.

Cunningham, an ex-intercounty footballer, continued to cause chaos, as he forced John Kavanagh into a concession of an own goal, before getting himself on the scoresheet with a late penalty, in time added on.

John Caulfield's side started brightly; and they forced Stuart Ashton's men into committing errors.

After the first goal, Galway initially tried to find the second goal but that subsided after the half-hour mark.

The hosts were extremely competitive for long periods of this game.

They comfortably played their way back in the latter stages of the first half; and continued that momentum into the restart.

Darryl Walsh, Naythan Coleman, and David O'Leary all had chances throughout the game. While Sean Barron dealt comfortably with several corners.

Cobh's best spell of the game came between the 55th and 70th minutes when they had Galway on the backfoot.

Galway were defensive and absorbing a lot of pressure, until Mikey Place, who had a solid performance was replaced by Cunningham.

The second Keating goal was a hammer blow.

The Tribesmen kicking on against a rapidly tiring Rams side to pick up a valuable three points to lift themselves back into promotion contention.
