Match Report
Shamrock Rovers have moved five points clear at the top of the SSE Airtricity League, Neil Farrugia’s first half strike the difference against UCD this evening. The Hoops will be happy with the 1-0 win, keeping their winning run alive standing at 26 unbeaten, 21 wins and 5 draws. UCD stayed with the champions, the early goal not slowing them down or forcing some rash decisions, they had efforts at goal but Rovers controlled possession and tempo of this tie. Rovers attacked early on Jack Byrne had a long-range strike fly over the bar, while Rory Gaffney headed wide from close range. Graham Burke continued the pressure with another long ranger, but it flew wide of the goal. Gaffney was getting on the ball a lot down the left hand side, he broke into the box and played a beautiful cross across the face of goal, with Neil Farrugia sliding into tap home at the back post. Burke had more chances in the half, he sent a shot that flashed past the goal before the next needed Lorcan Healy down quick to palm it out for a corner. Rovers dominated the possession with UCD getting half chances at goal, Dylan Duffy an ex Hoop had his effort deflected. Healy needed treatment after Gaffney almost decapitated him with a thunderous strike, the keeper putting everything on the line to make a save. Healy would be subbed as the second half began, he did well to save from Dylan Watts at the end of the half to keep it 1-0 at the break. The Hoops looked to add a second early in the half, Gaffney came close but missed the mark, while Burke had another great attempt at goal but Kian Moore on at half time did well to save. Moore was summoned again to deny goalscorer Farrugia from close range, the keeper made himself big coming off his line to keep it at 1-0. Daniel Cleary won a header from the resulting corner but it flew wide. Rovers were testing the students' substitute shotstopper in the second half, getting down well to deny both Watts and Gaffney, UCD came close after 63 minutes Duffy with a curling effort that Alan Mannus needed his fingertips to save. Burke tried the spectacular after 77 minutes, a lovely turn of movement in the area set up an effort, he tried to chip Moore having spotted him off the line but it drifted wide. UCD held firm to keep the tie tight and compact but failed to really test Rovers, Byrne had a late effort that again went wide, Healy and Moore both did well in the net to thwart the league leaders. Greene should have made it 2-0 in added on time, but his shot flew wide.Hoops extend lead at summit of Premier Division
