Match Report

Hoops Have It All To Do In Return Leg

Shamrock Rovers European campaign for 2023 hangs by a thread after a disastrous night in the Hungarian capital against Ferencvaros.

Rovers started well but once the momentum shifted it never came back, with a tough Mannus mistake and a Ramirez goal putting the hosts 2-0 up at the break.

Within seconds of the restart, all of Bradleys half time work was undone with Ramirez providing this time to Adama Traore who made no mistake. Adama turned provider for the fourth with Varga adding the fourth with ease.

For Rovers now, the task of overturning this scoreline will require a miracle, as Tallaght stadium looks to potentially host its last European game of the season next Thursday.

Despite the raucous atmosphere, it did not phase the Hoops as they opened the better of the two sides. Liam Burt who had a point to prove finally getting a starting berth had the first effort on target, dribbling through the backline but keeper Dibusz was out quick to snuff out the shot. Rovers did earn a couple of successive corners but did not trouble much apart from Burt again, who had a half chance with a volley that sailed over.

Despite the dominant opening ten minutes, it was the away side who took the lead after a couple of minutes sustained pressure themselves. Back to back corners that Rovers didn’t escape from left Daivd Siger with a pot shot from the edge of the area that struck Lopes and looped towards goal. Alan Mannus struggled with the awkward flight of the ball and the pressure around him and could not clear his lines, knocking the ball back into the net to give the home side the advantage.

From there it was all one way traffic, Ferencvaros really turned up the pressure and the Hoops could not get over the halfway line. Constant pressure from the hosts led to turnovers and shortly afterwards, the home side broke through again.

No doubt about the scorer of this one as Ecuadorian International Cristian Ramirez picked up the ball at the edge of the box and with a moment of real quality took one touch out of his feet and struck off his right low and hard, beating Mannus down to his right as the Hoops were beginning to feel their European campaign for 2023 vanish.

Getting in at half time was the aim at this point. With Bradley having to get the message of calm across from the sideline as his side were getting more and more erratic in their defensive play.

The aim for the second half had to be to keep the tie alive, and within 90 seconds, it was dead. Scorer of the second goal Cristian Ramirez put in a peach of a cross to Adama Traore, leaving the Mali man an easy task of heading up to put the hosts 3-0 up.

As the half wore on, the hosts understandably dropped their intensity but it allowed them to play more free and fancy and with the mood they were in absolutely every flick and trick was coming off.

With 15 on the clock, the ball was played down the right and Adama Traore, almost as fast as the Wolves player of the same name, burned Kavanagh for pace and got an effort away which was saved but the rebound fell to striker Varga who had a simple job to tap home.

Rovers did almost respond instantly but Kenny saw his effort cannon back off the bar and as he lay face first in the grass you could feel the drain in him and his teammates.

One bright moment came ten minutes from time as Naj Razi came off the bench for the second time this week. The 16 year old making his European debut tonight in Hungary, the same country where he starred for the Irish U17’s at the European Championships earlier this year.

A real tough night for Rovers as the mid-season blip now, providing a miracle in Tallaght next week leaves their sole focus on retaining the League of Ireland Premier Division title.

  • 93'

Full Time. History repeats as Rovers suffer a 4-0 defeat in Budapest for the second time in a year.

  • 90'

The 100 or so Rovers fans sing their heart out in the away end as we get confirmation of three minutes additional time.

  • 83'

Naj Razi introduced by Bradley for his European debut. A nice moment for the u17 international who played so well here for Ireland earlier this year.

  • 77'

Rovers hit the bar! Kenny with the effort and the follow up was well saved. Finally some Hoops pressure.

  • 75'

4-0. Kavanagh was absolutely burned for pace by Adama who managed to get a shot away, the rebound fell to Varga who scored.

  • 73'

Ferencvaros make their first two changes. Rovers hopeful that it can disturb their momentum but the hosts look so comfortable.

  • 67'

Abu Fani with a lovely dink over the top to Zachariassen who couldn't get his shot on target. A wonderful piece of skill which only emphasises how strong the home team are.

  • 65'

Intensity thankfully for Rovers has died down a little from the hosts, not so much from the Ultras though who are incredible.

  • 57'

If Rovers keep this at three it'll be a miracle, as Finn picks up a booking minutes after Hoare did so.

  • 47'

Adam Traore makes it three. A great cross from Ramirez left Traore an easy job to head home. You feel that this is tie over.

  • 46'

Second half underway. Got to keep the tie alive.

  • 46'

Ferencvaros take the field. Still waiting Rovers as the home crowd gets restless.

  • 45'

Half time. Mountain to climb for Rovers, only a quarter of the way through the tie.

  • 45'

Two minutes additional time at the end of the half. Bradley pleading for calm in the Rovers play, they're really struggling to get the ball down and play.

  • 40'

Hoops concede another corner but maybe lucky not to concede a penalty, absolute chaos in the box trying to deal with the ball. Desperately needing half time now.

  • 32'

2-0. Cristian Ramirez picked up the ball at the edge of the box and struck well down to Mannus' right and the Rovers netminder could net keep it out. A tough task just got even tougher.

  • 25'

Rovers in huge trouble here. Cannot get out of their own half. Ferencvaros massively boosted by the goal and pushing hard for number two.

  • 20'

Seemingly is was David Siger who gets credit for the goal, but Mannus gestures over to the bench to apologise.

  • 16'

Goal Ferencvaros. A harmless high looping ball into the box from Abu Fani saw Mannus flap at it and knock it back into his own net. Very unfortunate.

  • 15'

Home side get their first corner. Varga turning in and out down the side saw his cross blocked.

  • 11'

Liam Burt caught a volley at the edge on a breaking ball but couldn't keep it down. Again though, Rovers the better side in the opening 10.

  • 10'

Corner comes to nothing but Rovers continue with the more of the ball and are getting more comfortable. Second corner incoming for the Hoops.

  • 7'

Liam Burt causes the first attempt on target, doing well to dribble through the back line and shoot but the keeper was out quick. Corner for the Hoops.

  • 5'

Rovers with some of the ball early on, good to build up some confidence and feel their way into the game.

  • 1'

Kickoff in the Groupama Arena! Can Rovers get something to fight for at home? Time to find out.

  • What an atmosphere it is here in Budapest. Both teams on the field.

  • Ten minutes till KO, and we have an eagle flying around the stadium. European football.

  • Number 16 for Ferencvaros, Kristoffer Zachariassen came off the bench for Norway against Ireland at the Aviva last November.

  • Finn, Burke, Gaffney and Pohls all started in Iceland last week but do not feature in the XI tonight for Rovers. Burt, Kenny, Grace and Mannus all come in. Full team news available in the lineups tab.

  • We are 90 minutes out from kick-off in a sun soaked Budapest, thankfully though the press area is sitting in the shade.

  • Good evening and welcome to the FinalWhistle.ie coverage of the Europa Conference League tie between Ferencvaros and Shamrock Rovers, live from the Groupama arena in Budapest.
