Match Report

Europa Conference League Group Stage awaits for Shamrock Rovers

Despite winning on the night, Shamrock Rovers will have to settle for the Europa Conference League group stages, after failing to overturn the 4-1 deficit from the opening leg despite victory at Tallaght Stadium this evening.

Ferencvaros are back in the Europa League once more, the tie much more compact than what we saw in Budapest last Thursday, the Hoops much sharper and will leave wondering what could have been.

Goals win games and a distinct lack of shots on target from the hosts, made the already impossible task even more difficult, in spells Rovers threatened the late goal serving as a consolation to keep their European unbeaten streak alive.

The game began with a lack of urgency from both teams, a few half chances from both sides which did not lead to any scorable chances, set the tone for the opening half. Richie Towell missed the target before Justin Ferizaj came close with a curling effort outside the area in the 27th minute, but again it went wide.

Ferencvaros were dangerous but struggled to create a clear cut chance, Rovers able to ping possession around the Tallaght turf, had chances just not on target, Aidomo Emakhu created their best attempt at goal but Towell just could not stretch to tap home across fizzed in front of the Hungarian goal.

Just the one shot on target in the half and it fell right at the end of the half for the visitors, Ryan Mmaee connecting with an Eldar Civic free kick, his header was excellent but the save by Alan Mannus was better to keep it deadlocked at the interval.

Mannus was quick off his line seven minutes into the second half, Lee Grace appealed for a free kick after a tussle with Carlos Auzqui, he broke clear but the veteran keeper was out quickly to smother the danger.

Sean Kavanagh had the first shot on goal for the Hoops after 55 minutes, Emakhu fouled on the edge of the area, his powerful effort was saved well by Adam Bogdan. Towell had another chance minutes later Kavanagh with an inch perfect ball for him to Volley toward goal but it would not come down.

Mannus again had to save well to deny Mmaee, with the visitors having the better chances to see out the second half, Balint Vecsei missed the target, as too did Adama Traore, both causing issues. Franck Boli came close to making it 1-0 but his effort was blocked, the next came to Marquinhos but the Rovers defence was strong.

Andy Lyons could have made it 1-0 after 87 minutes, Jack Byrne playing him in with an amazing pass but Bogdan was down well. Lyons would get another chance as Byrne whipped in the corner, his header rippled the net, their unbeaten streak at home continues.

  • Only three teams have ever come back from a four goal deficit in European action, in 2017 Barcelona were 6-1 winners over PSG trailing 4-0 after the first leg, 1985 Real Madrid were 4-0 winners over Borussia Mönchengladbach having trailed 5-1 on aggregate, lastly in 1984 FK Partizan defeated QPR 4-0, having lost 6-2 in the first leg, all teams who came back were at home for the second leg, could we add a fourth tonight?

  • Following the defeat last week Stephen Bradley makes changes, Daniel Cleary drops out of the back three with Sean Gannon moving from the wing to play at the heart of the defence, Ronan Finn returns to play on the right while Andy Lyons drops to the bench as Sean Kavanagh plays on the wide left. Kavanagh moving wide sees Richien Towell come back into midfield joined by Justin Ferizaj as Dylan Watts does not start this week, finally a new front line sees Neil Farrugia and Aidomo Emakhu chasing the goals, Gaffney and Greene dropping to the bench

  • Shamrock Rovers need to pull out all the stops to reach the Europa League group stages, 4-0 down on aggregate they need a miracle performance to beat the Hungarian Champions, they are in the pot for the Conference League should they fail to advance, my name is Diarmuid Kearney and I will update the action from Tallaght this evening
