Match Report

Dolan’s Brace Seals Title for Peamount

Ellen Dolan starred as Peamount United clinched the title with a comfortable 2-0 win over Wexford Youths at Ferrycarrig Park.

The opening twenty minutes heralded a lot of enjoyable, quality football but no clear cut chances despite many promising openings, a Wexford corner flashed across the face of the Peamount goal halfway through the first period, but no touch came as the game remained scoreless.

30 minutes in it took for the first effort on target, a deflected effort by Jessica Fitzgerald that caused little trouble for Wexford keeper Claudia Keenan.

Emily Corbet couldn’t quite take the ball around Niamh Reid Burke as she stretched to control a lobbed ball over the top as Wexford looked most dangerous on the break.

The best chance of the first half fell just as the clock entered injury time, Erin McLaughin chested the ball down in the Wexford box, having been gifted far too much time, but the Peamount forward rushed her effort and struck over the bar as half time arrived scoreless.

As the game hit the hour mark the tight nature of the match was abolished and a flurry of chances ensued. Sadbh Doyle went close as she tried to whip a right footed effort into the Wexford net but shot wide after 61 minutes, Ellen Molloy had Wexford’s first serious effort, shooting just wide from range only moments later. Just a minute after that, McLaughlin came onto a loose ball in the Youths box and fired goalwards, only being denied by a fantastic block by Lauren Dwyer on the line.

In the 66th minute Peamount finally opened the scoring however, some poor marking by the home side allowed Ellen Dolan the space to direct a free header into the corner of the net to put the league leaders in front.

Peamount continued to control the game and the points were secured when Dolan stretched to turn a Doyle cross, bagging her second of the afternoon.

Wexford were reduced to 10 when Ciara Rossiter received a second yellow card to add insult to injury for the Youths.

The final whistle blew without further incident as Peamount claimed the title and celebrations ensued, with the large travelling contingent rushing to the field to join in on the enjoyment.

  • 90'

Nothing could stop Peamount's title march this season, and a weak performance by Wexford this afternoon handed the trophy to them on a silver platter.

  • 90'

And that's full time, a super display by Dolan gives Peamount the three points they needed to be crowned champions after an impeccable campaign, the celebrations are starting here as the well deserved champions can reflect on their brilliant season and relax from here on in.

  • 90'

Tough defeat for Wexford who never seemed likely to get back into the game once Peamount took the lead, looking the inferior side for most of this encounter

  • 89'

Peamount continue to pepper the Wexford net, enjoying themselves knowing the points are secure

  • 83'

Things go from bad to worse for Wexford as Rossiter receives her marching orders for a second yellow card offence

  • 81'

Peamount double their lead and its Dolan again as she stretches out to turn a Doyle cross past Keenan and probably wrap up the points for her team in this one

  • 77'

Peamount are displaying their ability to get the job done, relentless in their pursuit to put this game away and not giving Wexford time to think

  • 69'

A strike from range by Fitzgerald tests Keenan as she gets down low to her left to stop, Wexford are all at sea here now

  • 66'

Dolan opens the scoring with a well placed header into the corner of the Wexford net after some poor marking from a corner left the striker with a free header, and she made no mistake from 8 yards out

  • 64'

Beirne again breaks down the line and this time her cut back finds McLaughlin who's effort his cleared heroically off the line by Dwyer

  • 63'

Molloy shoots for Wexford from range, not missing by much as this game is heating up

  • 62'

Doyle has an excellent chance when she cuts the ball back onto her right from 15 yards, but her shot curls away from goal rather than towards and Wexford remain unscathe

  • 59'

Mclaughlin splits the Wexford defence, finding Beirne in space on the left with a slide rule pass, Beirne bears down on goal but her pull back is blocked, though she could have quite possibly shot for herself

  • 55'

Murphy connects with a corner at the backrest but she can only place it back into a dangerous area where Peamount are first to clear the ball

  • 48'

Wexford are playing back into the breeze this half, which may be in their advantage, as a lot of promising through balls in the first half ran just too far out for the forwards to catch as Reid Burke did an excellent job of sweeping up behind her defence

  • 46'

Back at it here in Wexford's cool sunshine

  • Half time arrives with both sides scoreless in a half devoid of many openings, the best chance falling to McLaughlin right on half time, which would have been a sucker punch to Wexford's half time morale. It might not take much to decide this game, lets see who will bring the firepower in the second half.

  • 45'

McLaughlin chests down unchallenged in the box, but rushes her attempt and fires the bouncing ball over the bar as we enter injury time

  • 33'

Tame effort by Sadbh Doyle, but Peamount look back in control after a flat ten minutes

  • 31'

Deflected strike by Fitzgerald on the edge of the Wexford area forces Keenan to cover across and make a routine save

  • 28'

High tackle by Rossiter had some fearing the worst fro a moment, but the referee pulls out a yellow as the Youths winger is the first in his book

  • 20'

Defiant strength there by Dwyer to hold off Dolan in a footrace back towards her own net, even earning her team a free kick and getting a rousing reaction by the thankful home crowd

  • 20'

The subsequent corner however is swung in sharply and flashes across the face, only needing a touch for surely a certain goal, but no one can apply it and the ball goes through the crowd and out for a goal kick

  • 20'

Some half hearted calls for handball as Chloe Moloney controls to clear the ball after a quick Wexford break in the penalty area, but nothing doing for the referee

  • 16'

Strong start from the visitors, their obvious class is very much on show so far

  • 15'

Freya Healy cuts in from the Peamount right, dropping her marker, but her shot is too high to trouble the Youths goal

  • 14'

Sinnott is turned expertly by Dolan who she then brings down and is very lucky not to pick up the games first yellow card

  • 12'

Super football by Peamount, but the final ball by Dolan just escapes her intended of McLaughlin at the back post

  • 9'

string challenge by Dolan has left Wexford's Dwyer down for some time as Youths continue with 10

  • 5'

Peamount are hassling the home sides defence high up the pitch as soon as they have the ball, Wexford must be careful not to lapse in possession against a team that can punish them so easily

  • 4'

Interestingly, both sides are without their top scorer for the season for the season. Peamount's top marksman Kate Mooney recently moved to English side Lewes, while Rianna Jarrett is unavailable for Wexford as she has been so often this season unfortunately for the south east side

  • 1'

    We are underway!

  • Its a crisp October afternoon here, bright and breezy as both sides make their way out onto the pitch for kick off

  • Wexford themselves are languishing in sixth place, far too inconsistent in a campaign that has left their supporters disappointed. With no chance of a title challenge at this point Wexford will hope to restore some pride and rock Peamount up on their perch

  • Just a few minutes out from the start as Wexford Youths make their final preparations before they host the league leaders Peamount United. The visitors will be in search of three points to bring them ever closer to the league title after a near flawless campaign so far has left them nine points clear at the top
