Match Report
Karen Duggan’s late strike secured Peamount all three points, as they had to come from behind to overcome Wexford Youths in Greenogue this evening. Very much a game of two halves, Wexford won the opening 45 and Peamount won the second and with it took the tie, Duggan grabbing their second after Erin McLaughlin struck their opener on the hour mark. They could not notch in the opening half as Rinna Jarrett struck home, but showed their class in the second, Ciara Rossiter shown a second yellow in stoppage time to see Youths finish with ten players, but a result that keeps Peamount on top of the mountain. Peamount started brightly but the opening early exchanges were all very much possession based, Erin McLaughlin fired over from range in an early chance as they looked dangerous when attacking but lacked an end result. In the 13th minute they looked to have worked a great chance, Tara O’Hanlon had an initial free kick, soon after Becky Watkins, Jess Fitzgerald and Kate Mooney all had some clever passes to work an attack, but Mooney was flagged for offside. Minutes later it was an absolute scramble in the Peas box, with the hosts just about doing enough to prevent Wexford going ahead, Rianna Jarrett had a shot blocked as bodies swarmed around the Wexford players to keep the tie scoreless. Wexford did however remain on the offensive front and won a corner soon after the initial chance, with Jarrett just heading wide. Peamount still had chances and looked likely to get the first goal but just could not convert, Fitzgerald beat two Wexford players before passing to Lauryn O’Callaghan on the right wing, but her cross was too heavy for Mooney to get on the end of, soon after Abbie Brophy had the best chance for Peamount but it was straight into the hands of Maeve Williams, it looked like Brophy had got the touch could easily have been an own goal only for her keeper to spare the blushes. Wexford almost came close before that chance but the cross met the hands of Niamh Reid-Burke, however just after the half hour mark they would take the lead, as Rianna Jarrett hit a lovely strike at goal that nestled into the left hand bottom corner, despite a strong hand from Reid-Burke, a lovely bit of one two play between her and Kylie Murphy in the build up saw the Youths lead. Peas went in search of an equaliser, but O'Hanlon tried an effort from range to try and pull Peamount level but the shot was tame and into the hands of Williams, that was the best chance of the end of the half for the hosts, Ciara Rossiter had a free kick hit the wall as Wexford pressed for a late goal in the half, but the sides remained on the same 1-0 scoreline at the break. Into the second half and Peamount looked sharp early in the half, Fitzgerald had a left footed strike saved by Williams, minutes earlier Mooney sent in a cross which was spilled by Williams in the Wexford goal. On the hour mark Peamount would draw level, Sadhbh Doyle sent in a great cross to Mooney who’s header was parried away by Williams, however it fell as far as McLaughlin who made no mistake and struck a lovely volley into an empty net. Chances were there soon after for the hosts to take the lead, Karen Duggan had a shot blocked by Louise Corrigan on its flight path toward the back of the net, minutes later Jetta Berrill sent a cross into the box but Mooney’s header went narrowly wide of the goal. It was all Peamount in the second half, as they had little chances to score, Mooney almost found the net with a header from a corner but it just went wide, before Emily Corbet had a shot saved by Reid-Burke. Kylie Murphy tried her luck from range late on but to no joy, at the other end Ellen Dolan and Fitzgerald had some nice possession before Doyle had a strike at goal that was also over the bar. Late drama would see captain Karen Duggan seal all three points, a game of tennis between the sides before Duggan hit a shot into the far corner of the Wexford goal, no more than they deserved after a strong second half showing.Captain Fantastic Duggan Grabs Three Points For Peamount
