Match Report

Shels smash Wexford at Tolka

Shelbourne demolished Wexford Youths 5-0 in a dreary afternoon at Tolka Park as the away side couldn’t live with the speed and invention of a team who look ready for a serious title charge.

Shebourne lost their previous meeting this season in Wexford to a 7th minute strike by Rianna Jarrett, but Shels didn't even need all of the opening minute to make their mark in this one, with Jesse Stapleton striking a half volley into the corner of the Wexford goal as the ball came out perfectly into the path of the defender from the game’s opening corner, who made no mistake in giving her side the early lead.

Shels were not in the mood to slow down after their lightning fast start however, and they made it two just 11 minutes in when Hannah Healy broke down the left hand side and despite a great initial stop by Maeve Williams in the goal, and a couple of heroic blocks from Orlaith Conlon from the follow ups, Hannah Healy was eventually able to squeeze the ball past the Wexford bodies and into the corner to double the home sides lead.

Wexford came back into the game and almost had a penalty awarded to them for handball but Emily Corbet was judged to have been offside just moments before. The Wexford team had lots of good possession but failed to make any significant chances during this time and were made to pay for it.

In the 45th minute the hammer blow came for Wexford. Christie Gray played a wonderful one-two with Healy as she sped away down the right hand side beyond the Wexford defence, arrowing her run towards goal and sliding her effort past Williams into the far corner to put Shels three goals ahead and out of reach of their sluggish opponents.

That being said, Rianna Jarrett had a wonderful chance to get a goal back for Wexford straight after the restart after a mistake by Shels allowed the ball to come all the way across to Jarrett only eight yards out, but she pulled her shot wide of the post on her left foot and the game continued at 3-0.

Shelbourne started to lay on the embarrassment when Megan Smyth-Lynch slipped a lovely ball around the corner to Jemma Quinn who drove into the right hand side of the box before striking low across goal, with the ball kissing the inside of the post as it made its way in for Shelbourne’s fourth goal of the afternoon.

Kerri Letmon nabbed a fifth just seconds after coming onto the pitch, cutting in from the left flank where she struck a breaking ball like a bullet into the bottom right hand corner from the edge of the area to heap more misery upon an already buried Wexford team.

Shelbourne moved up to second with the win and depending on the result between Shamrock Rovers and Peamount United, could end up staying there.

  • Full time at Tolka Park comes to the relief of Wexford Youths after they were completely taken apart by an extremely impressive and lively Shelbourne side who entirely deserved the 5 goal margin which brought them the three points today as the move up, at least briefly, to second place in the league

  • 89'

Wexford are completely dejected after a performance they won't be able to forget soon enough

  • 85'

Letmon's goal was with her first touch just seconds after coming onto the pitch

  • 81'

Letmon makes it 5, cuttuing in onto her right foot from the left hand wing she took aim with an exquisite strike from the edge of the box that flies like a bullet into the bottom corner

  • 77'

This game is now just a case of seeing the remaining few minutes out, Wexford look as though they cannot wait to get off the pitch as the rain begins to fall on what has been a miserable afternoon for them

  • 72'

Quinn hits a powerful volley just over at the end of the a very impressive team move

  • 68'

Shelbourne have began to roll in the subs with the three points wrapped up, only now a question of how much they will win by, they don't look like they've finished scoring

  • 61'

A little ball ball around the corner by Megan Smyth-Lynch breaks the line and sets Jemma Quinn in down the right channel and Quinn hits a brilliant low drive across the goal, clipping the inside of the post on its way to making it 4-0 to Shels

  • 58'

Corbet pokes one towards goal but the effort is saved easily as she was always stretching for the ball and couldn't generate the necessary power to trouble the keeper

  • 54'

Wexford need to create this half, with players like Jarrett and Corbet up front they are always dangerous but the supply has been lacking to allow them to get into the game

  • 47'

Rianna Jarrett misses a golden chance to give Wexford a slimmer of hope, a mistake by the Shelbourne defence allows the ball to come all the way across to Wexford's top scorer but the experienced striker pulls her shot wide of the target on her left foot

  • 46'

We are back on here at Tolka Park, in what could turn into a bit of a rout should Wexford not tighten up at the back

  • Halftime comes with Shels 3-0 in the lead after a fantastic display of fast, direct football. Wexford have looked slow and unimaginative compared to the speed and creativity of Shelbourne. There looks to be no way back for Wexford in this one after goals from Stapleton, Healy and Christie leave them trailing the meanest defence in the league by three goals after just 45 minutes

  • 45'

3-0 to Shels as Gray plays a lovely one-two with Healy and is slipped in behind the Wexford defence who can't match her pace, and she rolls one past Williams into the far corner to cap off a great first half for the Dublin side

  • 43'

Alex Kavanagh hits the side netting with free kick from a tight angle

  • 37'

Corrigan is the first player in the referees book this afternoon

  • 37'

Header by Jemma Quinn just wide from a well delivered set piece

  • 32'

Lots of slick football being played in the middle of the park by both sides, but very few chances since Shels second goal

  • 30'

Shelbourne have only conceded 6 goals so far this season, the lowest in the league, so they should have a lot of confidence in being able to see this game out with their defensive capabilities

  • 27'

Wexford have slowly pulled their way into this game and have been the better side in the last five. With the mountain they have to climb they'll need to keep this momentum up for the remainder of the game

  • 22'

Shels have a lucky break as they are saved from giving away a penalty and possibly a red card too as a handball block is overruled as Corbet had been flagged offside just beforehand

  • 15'

Wexford have not started this game whatsoever and need to be mindful not to concede any more if they have any chance off getting back into this game, but Shels are playing some wonderful attacking football, so it will be no easy task

  • 11'

2-0 to Shels already as Hannah Healy manages to poke the ball past Williams on the fourth time of asking after a fantastic save by the Wexford keeper and two fantastic blocks by Orlaith Conlon still wasn't enough to keep their opponents out from 8 yards

  • 5'

What a start for Shels who couldn't have imagined a better start to the game, Wexford still have a lot of time to recover but that's a very tough early blow to take

  • 1'

And a goal in the first minute! Jesse Stapleton smashes Shels in front on the half volley as the ball sat up beautifully for her breaking straight to the Shels defender from the opening corner and she puts her controlled strike in the corner

  • 1'

We are under way here as Shels begin attacking right from the off

  • Shelbourne are flying high this season currently occupying third position while Wexford in fifth have been hindered by their patchy form, exemplified by their recent 1-1 home draw to bottom of the table Cork City in their last match.

  • Just a few minutes out from the start of this afternoon's clash in Tolka Park between Shelbourne and Wexford Youths, Wexford won the recent meeting between the two sides in round eight 1-0 thanks to a Rianna Jarrett strike early in the affair, so Shels will be hoping they can exact some revenge here today
